About the Opportunity

As a Professional Co-Op / Intern at FirstEnergy, you will have an impact on the team's success. This position will support the Project Management and Workplace Planning teams, including supporting the completion of capital and O&M project administration, project programming, planning and design, and document management.

The position must maintain a safework environment and support a work-place of respect, appreciation and acceptance for everyone. In addition, your responsibilities may include:

  • Support Project Managers and Analysts to plan, facilitate and execute various capital and O&M facility projects;
  • Assist in design and review of various facility engineering plans and specifications, and other project documentation ensuring clarity and completeness – examples include programming and scoping documents, performance specifications, project plans, contracts, equipment and constructions bid packages, requisitions, bills of material or material requests for issue, task authorizations, and engineering work requests;
  • Perform detailed facility assessment analysis and input into FirstEnergy’s facility database for future capital and O&M project planning;
  • Survey various facilities for planning, capital, O&M and other project management requirements;
  • Execute various process improvement initiatives and tasks throughout Department;
  • Data mining, interpretation of data findings, thought-leadership and communication of results and recommendations to varying audiences, including executive leadership - Supporting two to four Project Managersat any given time;
  • Provide drafting support for Administrative Services and submit updates to facility floor plans;
  • Perform various project analytics and planning support responsibilities;
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations in a timely and efficient manner, as necessary;
  • Develop and maintain corporate design standards and other department records;


You will also have the opportunity to participate in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, which is designed to cultivate professional skills and provide professional level work at FirstEnergy. Each participant will receive apersonalized development plan, on-the-job training, and challenging assignments to refine skills and round out competencies.


  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program at an accredited university/college with a major inMechanical, Civil or Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Junior or senior with the ability to work two summers-preferred
  • Must be able to work without sponsorship (now and in the future)

  • Basic computer skills with strong experience using Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude to learn, produce results and develop relationships
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including both written and verbal communications, with the ability to make formal presentations to various audiences
  • Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects, with the aptitude to learn quickly and meettight deadlines
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to synthesize findings to an executive level audience
  • Organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet schedules
  • Able to work in a team environment with a constant focus on safety
  • Highly motivated to work independently and productively
  • Analytical skills to resolve problems and think creatively
