*Note- this is for up to 4 (four) openings based in Akron OH, or Connelsville, PA, subject to the hiring managers approval.


This position is responsible for supporting the safe, reliable and accurate operation of the FirstEnergy electricity metering system. There are multiple positions available in different roles consisting of work in an office, work in the field or a mixture of both. The successful candidate will be expected to perform one or more of the following roles:

  • Support field operations of the electricity metering system and smart metering communications network
  • Provide engineering support for electricity metering for low, medium and high voltage systems.
  • Operate the smart metering systems including data collection and system and communications network monitoring.

This is an entry level position with multiple career paths that could lead into Specialist, Engineer and Leadership positions for employees that demonstrate high performance and strong work ethic.


The successful career candidate will be based in Akron, OH or Connellsville, PA. However, based upon his or her location, the successful candidate may be required to travel extensively including overnight trips.  A good portion of the work may be primarily outside on electric line rights-of-way and in electrical substations with exposure to moisture, heat, cold, noise and uneven walking surfaces. 




The Equipment Support Technician must demonstrate a solid commitment to all aspects of workplace safety and adopt & live the FirstEnergy safety culture.


Depending on level of Equipment Support Technician hired, he or she will:


  • Assist with the coordination of repair activities with customers, contractors, internal entities and department sections (including contacts beyond normal work hours, as appropriate), and provides status updates when requested.
  • Identify the materials, equipment, and special tools required to complete approved technical support activities.
  • Provide reliable day-to-day support to supervision and other employees on assigned activities, taking steps to expedite delivery when necessary and/or practical.
  • Professionally communicate with customers, contractors, internal entities, and department sections.
  • Perform repair and tracking activities while solidifying skills, knowledge and maturity in analyzing data and findings.
  • Assist senior level technicians with programing and testing advanced capability electricity meters.
  • Assist electricity meter engineers on completion of new designs and projects.
  • Troubleshoot electricity metering installations to ensure accurate and reliable operations.
  • Provide a high level of technical support on electricity metering questions to FirstEnergy internal customers.
  • Perform day to day monitoring and troubleshoot issues with the smart metering data collection and/or communications network systems.
  • Provide assistance during emergencies and storm-related activities and travel to various off-site locations as well as FirstEnergy office locations, training facilities and customer sites, when requested.



Qualifications at the Assistant Level:

  • Must have a minimum of a 4yr degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology along with 0-2 years of related job experience. Related work experience is knowledge of troubleshooting, electrical equipment and circuits, following work procedures and best methods and utilizing tools which would be used to perform equipment support activities.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in interpreting work requests, design drawings, schematics, equipment instruction manuals and procedures to develop accurate work plans.
  • Must have basic knowledge of the purpose, function, and operating characteristics of equipment and systems, (i.e. substation, overhead lines, underground lines, electricity metering), as well as, the ability to learn construction methods, maintenance practices, service practices, standards and procedures.
  • Must be proficient with PC software applications including Microsoft Office, (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.) along with the ability to learn Industry Software including SAP, CASCADE and power outage reporting system (PowerOn).


Qualifications at the Associate Level include all the above, plus:

  • 2-4 years of related job experience
  • Must have the ability to acquire knowledge and understanding of legal and regulatory requirements.


The successful candidate:

  • Must understand the Company’s Accident Handbook and apply this to safety in the workplace.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to operate in a team or consensus decision-making environment, possessing the ability to evaluate solutions and make decisions based on knowledge of work practices and consultation with minimal supervision.
  • Must be self-motivated with a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.
  • Must have a personal vehicle or the ability to rent a vehicle to commute to various facilities and locations as required, possessing a valid driver’s license as well as the ability book lodging & meals using a personal credit card.
