About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.  [SC00]


The College Recruiter is responsible for consulting with FirstEnergy’s hiring managers and performing full-cycle recruiting of co-ops, interns and recent college graduates.  The position plays an integral role in the facilitation and administration of the company’s formal Co-op/Intern Program.


The position reports to the Manager, Recruiting and is located at the Corporate Office in Akron, Ohio.


Responsibilities include:

  • Developing new and enhancing existing relationships with targeted universities both across and, as strategically appropriate, outside of FirstEnergy’s geographic footprint in support of establishing a qualified diverse pipeline of talent.
  • Attending university, diversity and professional association events.
  • Partnering with hiring managers, college liaisons and field HR staffs to encourage participation and involvement in college recruiting activities.
  • Developing creative sourcing strategies to identify diverse slates of qualified candidates through various recruiting sources and tools.
  • Creating and fostering relationships with diverse student and community organizations to attract candidates to meet Affirmative Action and diversity hiring goals.
  • Holding strategic consultation meetings with hiring managers and developing job postings based on the responsibilities and qualification requirements of open positions.
  • Ensuring diversity is appropriately represented at all stages of the hiring process in compliance with the guidelines outlined in FirstEnergy’s hiring process policy (HR Letter 202).
  • Utilizing the SuccessFactors “Staff My Organization (SMO)” Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to manage the recruiting process, capture candidate data and disposition candidates.
  • Posting positions on FirstEnergy’s external career website, as well as on targeted third-party and college/university job boards to attract qualified candidates.
  • Reviewing resumes and academic credentials for appropriateness of skills, experience, education and knowledge in relation to position and Co-op/Intern Program requirements.
  • Providing support and involvement in FirstEnergy’s efforts to extend our talent reach to the high school level by partnering with various STEM focused schools and institutions.
  • Developing and delivering presentations for various audiences.
  • Establishing candidate qualifications by developing knowledge, skill and screening questions for each position including conducting phone screens and interviews, exploring career options with candidates, and examining college transcripts for program eligibility.
  • Providing guidance to hiring managers to ensure that the recruiting process complies with State and Federal employment laws, and maintaining thorough documentation of requisition status, candidates considered and selection decisions.
  • Extending employment offers by selling the organization's values, strengths and opportunities and negotiating final terms with candidates.
  • Coordinating the conversion of Co-op/Intern Program graduates to full-time positions.
  • Maintaining current reports and records to track Co-op/Intern Program information and to analyze data and trends.
  • Researching college recruiting best practices, methods and processes to proactively recommend process improvement opportunities.
  • Maintaining a high degree of confidentiality on projects and employee-related information.




  •  Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business or related discipline and minimum 2 years relevant work experience required.  In lieu of Bachelor’s degree (preferred), a minimum 4 years relevant work experience is required.  Relevant experience is defined as prior professional experience in Human Resources, Talent Sourcing, Recruiting, and/or College Recruiting.
  • Prior college/campus recruiting experience is preferred.
  • Superior sales and presentation skills, high energy level and a sense of creativity to effectively match candidates with the company's needs, and to positively portray FirstEnergy and its culture, values, and priorities.
  • Strong organizational and follow up skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Must have outstanding negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Sound interviewing, organizational, public relations, negotiation and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Applicant Tracking Systems.  Prior experience with the SuccessFactors ATS/Recruiting module preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Employment Laws and HR Policies.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong business acumen and analytical skills.
  • Must possess strong team building skills and be a positive contributor in a team environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and internet research.  Knowledge of SAP highly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of professionalism and motivation.
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain composure in a high-volume, fast paced environment.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage strong relationships with a broad range of individuals at various levels of the organization.
  • Available to work before and after standard office hours as work requires.
  • Must be able to travel year-round to attend Co-op/Intern Program events, career fairs/events and conferences as necessary.  Travel may be especially heavy during the Spring and Fall college career fair seasons.
