About the Opportunity

The Commercial Litigation Attorney works directly with business units, department lawyers and outside counsel on commercial litigation and other company matters. This individual oversees all aspects of dispute resolution, including, litigation, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and pre-conflict activities. The attorney has responsibility for their own case load and will have responsibility related to complex litigation matters, with a consistent amount of legal writing.


The FirstEnergy Legal department provides exceptional counsel that assures legal compliance and enables FirstEnergy to optimize business outcomes in all legal, regulatory, and commercial contexts. The Legal department is involved in every major activity and initiative involving all entities of FirstEnergy Corp.


The position reports to the Supervising Counsel who is responsible for commercial litigation.


Responsibilities include:


  • Managing a wide range of legal matters in federal and state courts, mediation, and arbitration
  • Identifying litigation risk areas and advising internal stakeholders to reduce risk
  • Working on complex legal matters as part of a team with attorneys, business units, and outside counsel
  • Managing internal processes related to litigation, including e-discovery and litigation-management tools
  • Engaging in frequent client contact and handling multiple ongoing cases simultaneously
  • Drafting and reviewing legal pleadings and various business documents; preparing witnesses for and defending depositions
  • Providing legal support and strategic and business advice to FirstEnergy business units, including advice on emerging energy and utility issues
  • Contributing meaningfully to the organization with innovative thinking and resourcefulness




  • J.D. degree from an accredited university is required
  • Minimum 3 years relevant work experience is required.  Relevant work experience includes practicing law, legal writing and handling complex legal matters
  • Member in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar
  • Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced and demanding environment
  • Sound and practical business judgment, work ethic, and problem-solving skills
  • Project management experience
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to understand new topical areas
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and time to adhere to deadlines
  • Electric utility industry experience helpful
