The Communications Representative, Transmission, is responsible for developing, producing and implementing strategic communications for Energizing the Future, FirstEnergy’s multi-year electric transmission investment program.


The position will work closely with FirstEnergy’s Transmission leadership team and other key personnel within the company to communicate the customer benefits of timely investment in FirstEnergy’s 24,500-mile transmission network, which stretches across six states in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. He/she will be responsible for guiding strategic messages, creating comprehensive communications plans, and producing project-specific communications materials to help support regulatory approvals and public involvement efforts involved with successfully siting new transmission infrastructure across FirstEnergy’s service area.


The ideal candidate will possess the ability to serve as a trusted consultant to senior Transmission leadership, providing proven communications strategies for mitigating stakeholder and community impacts associated with an ambitions grid modernization effort. The individual must possess strong writing and verbal communications skills and be able to meet tight deadlines while managing multiple projects simultaneously.


The position reports to the Manager, External Communications, in the Communications & Branding department and is located at the Corporate Office in Akron, Ohio.


Responsibilities include:

  • Develop comprehensive campaigns and communications plans that incorporate a wide range of media and formats to reach and engage various audiences, including regulators, law makers, investors, customers and communities
  • Produce compelling messaging and supporting data points that illustrate the customer benefits of a long-term grid modernization initiative
  • Draft, edit and implement effective key messages, talking points, fact sheets, web content and visual displays to support community outreach efforts and drive public support for transmission projects.
  • Monitor media and social media discussions on transmission-related topics and leverage insights to strengthen FirstEnergy’s communications approach
  • Build a media strategy and seek out media opportunities to ensure visibility of our story
  • Develop strong relationships with media covering transmission issues and local reporters in areas where FirstEnergy operates to generate informed reporting
  • Serve as a company spokesman on transmission projects and initiatives, using reporting and storytelling techniques to deliver a clear, compelling message through print, TV and radio interviews
  • Manage and attend public open house meetings designed to seek community input on proposed transmission infrastructure, providing counsel to other FirstEnergy participants to ensure a clear, cohesive company message
  • Produce videos and other engaging content for social platforms to help demonstrate FirstEnergy’s efforts to build and upgrade transmission infrastructure with minimal impact on communities and the environment
  • Measure and analyze the impact of transmission communications plans, reporting findings back to Communications and Transmission leadership and adjusting future plans to enhance effectiveness
  • Serve as part of the External Communications department after hours media on-call rotation, providing evening and weekend response for outage and other media inquiries
  • Provide support during large scale outages or other significant events as part of the External Communications Emergency Response Team


  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or related discipline required.
  • Minimum 7 years relevant work experience required.  Relevant work experience will include high level communication skills and strong ability to develop strategy
  • Possesses strong writing and verbal skills and crafts compelling, impactful content based on conducting research and interviewing subject matter experts
  • Strong editing and analytical skills, knowledge of design, layout and photography principles
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various groups in the organization or on a self-directed basis
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Office 365, SharePoint)
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and prioritize work
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with employees at all levels
