About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co. a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [SC00]

 

The position is within the FE Innovation Center and reports to the Manager, Analytics. It can be located throughout the service territory with regular travel required.

 

This position will use machine learning, artificial intelligence, and statistical methods to answer critical questions for business units. Using quantitative models, this position will generate and test hypotheses, explore datasets, develop data pipelines, and build accurate predictive models to produce actionable insights.

 

A successful candidate should be excited by creating complex models, have strong communication skills to understand business needs and translate them into valid research questions, be excited by innovation and new ideas, and have a passion for learning.

 

There are two openings.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with business stakeholders to generate and test hypotheses that answer business questions
  • Deepen understanding of utilities structure and operations to more effectively answer the right question
  • Build and maintain models to enable and improve data-driven decision making
  • Mine complex data to identify patterns and trends
  • Perform hands-on text, quantitative, statistical, financial, and operational analysis
  • Build and test machine learning algorithms, forecasting/predictive algorithms, and optimization models
  • Apply best available practices for artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Identify new data sources and evaluate emerging technologies for data discovery and model development.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as Data Science, Computer Science, Math, Statistics, Economics, or Engineering with minimum 4 years relevant work experience required OR Master’s degree with 2 years relevant work experience required OR PhD with 0-2 years relevant work experience required. Relevant work experience will include data analytics or data science or economic/quantitative research roles.
  • Experience with programming languages, such as Python, R, and SQL
  • Ability to design experiments and research questions to accurately determine causal relationships using appropriate techniques such as regression modelling or time series modelling
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques and their applications
  • Experience with big data tools (e.g. TensorFlow, Python, Hadoop, Spark).
  • Experience in at least one programming language or statistical software package such as Python, R, Stata, or Matlab. Familiarity with linear regression modelling and other statistical techniques such as t-tests, least squares, confidence intervals.
  • Familiarity with machine learning models such as decision trees, random forests, and neural networks and evaluation metrics like F1 score and ROC AUC
  • Experience working with large datasets.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate a variety of ideas for solutions
  • Ability to learn, grow and work across FirstEnergy and deliver results
  • Experience in building positive relationships and working with peers cross-functionally, demonstrating teamwork and collaboration
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and competing needs to prioritize work appropriately
  • Ability to appropriately manage conflict and work through difficult situations as needed
  • Willingness to travel throughout organization and service territory and work extended hours, as required
  • Utility specific experience a plus
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
