About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

This position can be filled in Akron, OH or Fairmont, WV


Members of the EMS Systems Administration team apply software, hardware, networking, and/or engineering principles to support FirstEnergy’s Energy Management System (EMS) environment.  The work focuses on maintaining a system architecture that meets the end-user requirements, while maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.




Software Management:

  • Manage third-party vendor software on FirstEnergy's standard infrastructure and network platforms
  • Manage the testing and deployment of patches and software upgrades
  • Support real-time SCADA software and database configurations
  • Maintain interfaces between FirstEnergy real-time systems
  • Perform system security administration tasks


Data Management:

  • Support GE’s e-terraarchive and e-terrasource products and Oracle databases
  • Support data extraction and transformation through the GE tool set and PERL scripts
  • Develop data queries and reporting solutions to meet customer requirements
  • Support enhanced visualization projects for FirstEnergy's transmission control rooms


Communication Management:

  • Support GE’s e-terracontrol product running on the EMS Front End Processors (FEP)
  • Support SCADA via Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) communications to FEPs
  • Work with EMS communications hardware





  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar technical discipline with 2-4 years related experience.  Related experience includes, but not limited to:
    • Experience with real-time systems, client/server architectures, and databases.
    • Experience managing high-availability complex data sets, data communications, and/or networking.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to company sites, work flexible hours, and be available for call-in and after-hours support (7x24 operations) as needed
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels and with varying backgrounds



  • Familiarity with relevant utility operations (transmission, distribution, generation)
  • Computer programming skills such as Microsoft Visual C++ and PERL scripting
