About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU]


This position reports to the Supervisor, Operational Technology Configuration Management (OTCM) and is located at the General Office in Akron, Ohio 44308. The OTCM group is currently in a cross functional multi-year undertaking to develop and implement processes and tools that will enable FirstEnergy to record the evidence required to demonstrate regulatory compliance and effectively analyze and report on process performance and compliance.  Objectives include: substation work order integration, enterprise process alignment, systems integration, data integrity, reporting, and process performance monitoring.  Additional functions of the OTCM group include supporting, enhancing, and refining the tools and processes associated with the setting / configuration management of configurable substation equipment (including protective relays). These processes and tools are used in the collection, storage, reporting and analysis of configurable device artifacts (nameplate attributes, as-found and as-left configurations [“settings”] and test results). 


The position will work across the FirstEnergy enterprise footprint with many departments, including but not limited to: Asset Management and Records Control, regional operating companies (x10), FERC Compliance, Energy Delivery Planning & Protection, Transmission & Substation Design, Transmission & Substation Services, Project Management, IT, Work Force Development, and Work Management.  In additional to internal FirstEnergy stakeholders, this position will work with external vendors, including Doble/ENOSERV, DNV GL and contractors.



  • Demonstrating and directing a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
  • Develop and document business processes as needed to insure consistent, sustainable operations of the OTCM system.
  • Proposing new solutions to improve PowerBase (by ENOSERV), RTS (by ENOSERV) and related tools to insure accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to applicable FirstEnergy standards.
  • Understanding and managing work according to business needs, departmental budget, and regulatory requirements. 
  • Leading process improvement activities that increase productivity and enhance data quality.
  • Analyzing complex issues and developing actionable recommendation; ensuring decisions impacting the team and FE Regional Management are based on data and sound reasoning.
  • Provide services to help maintain the integrity of substation equipment configuration and related data in the OTCM system.
  • Work with others on the Asset Information and Tools team to insure proper processing of substation equipment data between Cascade and PowerBase.
  • Provide OTCM business administration services necessary to insure compliance with all regulatory standards including CIP and internal standards including Regulatory Access Authorization Database (RAAD).
  • Work with Doble/ENOSERV (PowerBase & RTS software vendor) to coordinate system improvements, upgrades and testing new releases of the code.
  • Work with FE IT, and all FE internal stakeholders to coordinate OTCM system upgrades and maintenance outages. 
  • Provide training on Powerbase, RTS and related process, systems, tools and functionality based on FE impacted roles and responsibilities.
  • Work with approximately 800+ FE OTCM users.
  • Supporting the FE Emergency Plan through participating in the assigned storm duties including hazard response and hazard dispatch activities.



Qualifications at the Engineer III level include:

  • BS degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school (Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil) required, or a P.E. License.  Position level requires minimum of 2 years of professional engineering experience. (Advanced degree a plus).
  • Understanding of substations and substation devices is preferred.
  • Experience with configuration of substation devices preferred.
  • Project Management experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand substation prints and bills of material preferred.
  • Ability to analyze large datasets.
  • Strong analytical and technical abilities.
  • Familiarity with either or all – Cascade / PowerBase / RTS / QlikView / Relay Settings System (RSS) / Energy Delivery Outage Application (EDOA) / CrossBow / SAP is a plus.
  • Knowledge of network communications devices and architecture is preferred.
  • Familiarity working with databases is preferred.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Word is a plus.
  • In-depth understanding of customer needs and expectations.
  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.
  • Ability to model active learning through continuing to develop breadth of knowledge, skills, and perspective.
  • Excellent technical and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with employees at all levels of FirstEnergy Corp.
  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; Ability to effectively present complex subject matter to all levels of management.
  • Some travel required; must possess a personal vehicle and valid driving license.
