The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need.  This option is not available in the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oregon or Washington at this time.

The Information Technology organization at FirstEnergy creates and maintains software solutions and operates FirstEnergy data centers, service desks and voice/data networks.  

 

As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work at FirstEnergy. Each participant will receive on-the-job training, and challenging assignments to refine skills and round out competencies. Summer Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time opportunities spanning 13 weeks. FirstEnergy offers paid internships to qualified students actively enrolled in an accredited university or college. 

 

As a Fiber Network Transport Specialist Intern, you will have hands on experience in working with management, engineering and field personnel within IT and other FirstEnergy Departments on a daily basis. You will also work closely with a wide range of fiber contractors and sub-contractors. FirstEnergy has over 9,000 miles of private fiber which provides critical connectivity to offices, service centers, and substations. 

 

Examples of possible job duties and responsibilities of a Fiber Network Specialist Intern:  

  • Support and manage the FirstEnergy Fiber Optic Network and projects. 

  • Follow established IT Operations and network processes.  

  • Championing safe work practices for FirstEnergy employees and contractors in accordance with Corporate, OSHA and other industry practices. 

  • Work closely with other FirstEnergy departments, contractors, and subcontractors to develop project requirements, costs and schedule. 

  • Develop business cases for new projects. 

  • Field site visits in support of projects, maintenance, or relocations (as necessary). 

  • Design fiber solutions that are scalable, reliable, and cost effective.  

  • Ensure FirstEnergy and contractor documentation is complete and up to date. 

  • Coordinate fiber optic events within the FirstEnergy Change Management process. 

 

Applicant Requirements: 

  • Currently enrolled full time in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Information Technology, Engineering, Telecommunications or other related disciplines.  

  • Class Standing – Graduating Spring 2025 or Fall 2025. 

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. 

  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future) 

 

Preferred Skills/Experience: 

  • Basic telecommunications concepts. 

  • Project management concepts and tools. 

  • Network design, engineering, and drawing management tools.

  • Highly motivated to work independently and productively and learn quickly 

  • Must be organized and work well with constant priority changes 

  • Proven team player, contributes to team goals, encourages, and supports team members 

  • Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects 

  • Organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet schedules 

  • Ability to work remotely, utilizing virtual technologies 

  • Robust communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively participate on a team and in remote meetings and conference calls 

  • Sound understanding of Microsoft Office line of products, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint 

  • Strong attention to detail 

  • Strong technical writing skills
