The position is in Human Resources within the Executive Compensation group and reports to the Manager, Executive Compensation. It may be located In Ohio or Pennsylvania with travel as needed.


The position is responsible for performing various business-related activities to support the Executive Compensation department. The Executive Compensation team is responsible for designing and providing competitive base pay and incentives to executives aligned with the compensation philosophy. This position partners with the business units to ensure that programs support their objectives by helping to attract and retain key and critical talent. In addition, this position designs and provides market competitive total rewards in order to attract, motivate, retain and reward employees whose performance contributions and behaviors help drive the Company's success.


Responsibilities include:

  • Leads the Executive Deferred Compensation Plan (EDCP), including the plan administration, policies and guidelines for deferrals of base salary, FirstEnergy's Short-Term Incentive Program (STIP), and FirstEnergy's Long-Term Incentive Program (LTIP)
  • Oversees and coordinates EDCP administration with an external vendor
  • Leads the EDCP open enrollment process (monthly and annually)
  • Prepares monthly EDCP reports including, but not limited to, terminated employees, promotions to executive levels, distribution reports, base salary deferrals
  • Coordinates with other members on the team to process deferrals annually under the STIP and LTIP
  • Compiles data in preparation for retirements (projections and actual retirements), including data requests from external financial providers
  • Oversees and coordinates with Payroll on the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxation for retirees
  • Reviews and supports calls from retirees with questions on the EDCP, beneficiary changes and/or account distribution
  • Consulting with business unit leaders on executive compensation practices and processes, especially on the EDCP
  • Preparing and delivering compensation-related presentations to executives within the company
  • Working knowledge or familiarity of Code Section 409A is a plus




  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business or related discipline and minimum 4 years relevant work experience required.  In lieu of Bachelor’s degree (preferred), minimum 7 years relevant work experience required.  Relevant work experience will include the demonstrated ability to:
    • Perform HR related responsibilities (preferred) or similar business activities that require a working knowledge of company policies and procedures
    • Identify and solve problems
    • Conduct research, analyze data and present findings.  Ability to extract and manipulate data from various sources
    • Communicate effectively (both written and verbal) with the ability to tailor messages to appropriate audience
    • Present information to a variety of audiences
    • Be resourceful in finding answers independently
    • Prioritize and work well in an environment with competing demands, while maintaining a strong attention to detail


  • SPHR/PHR certification preferred
  • Ability to learn, grow and work across FirstEnergy and deliver results
  • Experience providing customer-focused support, both internally and externally
  • Experience in building positive relationships and working with peers cross-functionally, demonstrating teamwork and collaboration
  • Basic knowledge of Federal, State and local HR regulations
  • Familiarity with bargaining unit agreements preferred
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, teamwork and leadership skills
  • Ability to analyze business needs and generate applicable reports to meet business unit objectives
  • Ability to appropriately manage conflict and work through difficult situations as needed
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Willingness to travel throughout organization and work extended hours, as required
  • Must be available to assist in outage or storm restoration support during evenings and weekends as needed
