The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need.  This option is not available in the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oregon or Washington at this time.

The Information Technology organization at FirstEnergy creates and maintains software solutions, and operates FirstEnergy data centers, service desks and voice/data networks.  

 

As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work at FirstEnergy. Each participant will receive on-the-job training, and challenging assignments to refine skills and round out competencies. Summer Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time opportunities spanning 13 weeks. FirstEnergy offers paid internships to qualified students actively enrolled in an accredited university or college. 

 

As a Data Engineer Intern, you will have hands on experience in extract-transform-load (ETL) and Data Management space.  

 

Examples of possible job duties and responsibilities of a Data Engineer:  

Data Management team within FirstEnergy’s Information Technology group is responsible for the design, development and enhancement of Data Warehousing and Analytics applications. A Data Engineer at FirstEnergy works closely with Business Systems or Business resources to make appropriate technological choices; proceeds to architect and design the required application. This role requires deep understanding of data architecture, data engineering, data analysis, reporting, and a basic understanding of data science techniques and workflows. The ideal candidate is a skilled data and software engineer with experience creating data products supporting analytic solutions.  

A Data Engineer at FirstEnergy typically performs the following activities during the application development process: 

  • Requirements analysis: document and review functional and non-functional requirements for the application 

  • Solutions maintenance: Responsible for maintaining the data warehousing platforms housed on various on premise or cloud database engines.   

  • Architect: Decompose the application into various components and make appropriate technological choices in the implementation and integration of the components also giving due consideration to availability, recovery, security, performance, and governance requirements. 

  • Analysis and design:  Define and document the logical data model and create the physical data model in a database. Define and create Data Lake and Data Warehousing models for reporting or analytics.  

  • Build and test: Create physical data model. Implement data extraction functions and transformation logic.  Document all design and specifications. Document metadata information.  

  • Communicate design and logic to business users by explaining how a data model relates, where the data comes from, and logic used in the ETL (extract, transform, load) process. Foster a culture of sharing, re-use, design for scale stability, and operational efficiency of data and analytical solutions.   

 

Applicant Requirements: 

  • Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Computer Science or other related disciplines.  

  • Class Standing – Graduating Spring 2025 or Fall 2024. 

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. 

  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future) 

  

Required Skills/Experience: 

  • SQL Querying skills 

  • Familiarity with database objects and concepts (tables, views, joins, primary keys, indexes, functions/procedures) 

 

Ideal Candidate: 

  • Highly motivated to work independently and productively 

  • Willing to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects and demonstrate aptitude to learn quickly.   

  • Highly motivated; can work independently with a high level of productivity. 

  • Excel at communicating complex ideas and concepts both verbally and through writing.  

  • Must be organized and work well with constant priority changes 

  • Proven team player, contributes to team goals, encourages, and supports team members 

  • Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects 

  • Organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet schedules 

  • Ability to work remotely, utilizing virtual technologies 

  • Robust communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively participate on a team and in remote meetings and conference calls 

  • Sound understanding of Microsoft Office line of products, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 

  • Strong attention to detail 

  • Strong technical writing skills
