The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need.  This option is not available in the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oregon or Washington at this time.

The Information Technology organization at FirstEnergy creates and maintains software solutions, and operates FirstEnergy data centers, service desks and voice/data networks.  


As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work at FirstEnergy. Each participant will receive on-the-job training, and challenging assignments to refine skills and round out competencies. Summer Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time opportunities spanning 13 weeks. FirstEnergy offers paid internships to qualified students actively enrolled in an accredited university or college. 


We have recently embarked on a Digital transformation journey where we are reimagining the way we work and serve our users. Our projects benefit the community by aiding in providing safe, reliable electricity to everyone:  

  • Customer: create analytics to improve customer satisfaction along the customer journey for a lifetime as they move-in to a residence, pay their bill and move to new residences.  

  • Transmission & Distribution: develop algorithms to detect asset failures, reduce outages and provide reliable electricity to customers.   

  • Smart Meter: provide customers with the electric usage they need to make smart decisions about their home as well as reduce threats and theft in the electric system. 


As a Digital Designer Intern in the FirstEnergy Digital Factory, you will have hands on experience in the end-to-end design process from early ideas to research, workshop facilitation, UX design, and more. The design team works on cross-functional agile squads inside the Innovation and Digital Factory group. We support both external and internal customer journeys.  


Examples of possible job duties and responsibilities of a Digital Designer Intern:  

  • Leverage design thinking on project as a way to engage and involve stakeholders and squads 

  • Use UI/UX best practices and collaborate with other designers to problem solve design challenges  

  • Contribute to our Design System in Figma 

  • Organize and/or facilitate user research to generate insights that will inform design solutions 


Applicant Requirements: 

  • Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on visual communication design, user experience, human computer interaction, or other related disciplines 

  • Class Standing –Graduating in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025. 

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. 

  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future) 


Preferred Skills/Experience: 

  • Some knowledge of the end-to-end design process 

  • Some experience with Figma preferred but not required – experience with XD, Sketch, Axure, etc. also acceptable 

  • Problem solving, organizational, and analytical skills 

  • Confident in presenting designs and research

  • Highly motivated to work independently and productively and learn quickly 

  • Must be organized and work well with constant priority changes 

  • Proven team player, contributes to team goals, encourages, and supports team members 

  • Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects 

  • Organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet schedules 

  • Ability to work remotely, utilizing virtual technologies 

  • Robust communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively participate on a team and in remote meetings and conference calls 

  • Sound understanding of Microsoft Office line of products, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint 

  • Strong attention to detail 

  • Strong technical writing skills
