The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need.  This option is not available in the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oregon or Washington at this time.

The Information Technology organization at FirstEnergy creates and maintains software solutions, and operates FirstEnergy data centers, service desks and voice/data networks.  

 

As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work at FirstEnergy. Each participant will receive on-the-job training, and challenging assignments to refine skills and round out competencies. Summer Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time opportunities spanning 13 weeks. FirstEnergy offers paid internships to qualified students actively enrolled in an accredited university or college. 

 

Positions available for a Summer 2023 IT Electrical Engineering Internship within the Information Technology organization include: 

  • SCADA Modeling Specialist  

  • SCADA Design Specialist 

  • Communication Systems Design Specialist 

 

SCADA Modeling Specialist  

  • Supports FirstEnergy’s Transmission Energy Management System 

  • Core responsibilities include the design, development and support of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and grid monitoring displays used as part of FirstEnergy’s Transmission Energy Management System (EMS).  

 

Additional job duties and responsibilities of a SCADA Modeling Specialist:  

  • Design, build, and enhance FirstEnergy’s EMS to provide tools for situational awareness of electrical system conditions 

  • Develop displays and provide configuration of Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) to facilitate monitoring and control of substations and line devices 

  • Maintain, support, and enhance the SCADA and display components of the EMS  

  • Assist with administration, maintenance, testing, and upgrades to the system software 

  • Management, testing, and checkout of SCADA and display changes in the development, quality assurance, simulator, and production environments 

  • Support Transmission system operators and engineers in the use of the EMS 

  • Develop and communicate system documentation, version release notes, and training material 

 

SCADA Design Specialist  

  • Supports FirstEnergy’s Transmission & Distribution Energy Management Systems (EMS)Core responsibilities include Designing, developing, and supporting Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) field equipment that communicates with FirstEnergy’s Transmission & Distribution Energy Management System (EMS). 

 

Additional job duties and responsibilities of a SCADA Design Specialist:  

  •  Designing for the installation and modification of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) field equipment, with an emphasis on configuration of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) to communicate to real-time systems that monitor and control field assets. Ex: RTU’s, Data Concentrators, and HMI’s. 

  • Complete and issue SCADA Design Work Package 

  • Perform data analysis and create reports, scorecards, and historical trends 

  • Assist with administration, maintenance, and upgrades of software 

  • Managing schedules and coordinate changes following established department procedures 

 

Communication Systems Design Specialist 

  • Supports technology platforms delivering voice, video, and computing services to FE employees, contractors, and business partners. 

  • Core responsibilities include the architecture, engineering, design, implementation, regulatory compliance, and ongoing reliability of RF communication systems, telecommunications circuits and the supporting infrastructure including: 

  • DC power systems 

  • Batteries 

  • Emergency Generators 

  • Load calculations for AC/DC systems 

 

Additional job duties and responsibilities of a Communication Systems Design Specialist:  

  • Participate in installations and upgrades of communications technologies to ensure computing and network architecture solutions are properly implemented. 

  • Support the operational performance and maintenance of existing network circuits as well as design and delivery of new products/product enhancements. 

  • Ensure technical standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements are properly implemented on assigned projects. 

  • Maintain scope, schedule, and budget for assigned projects. 

  • Take ownership of assigned work and coordinates with internal and external groups on project delivery. 

  • Maintain functional knowledge of technology, technology changes, and the relationships of technology to emerging business requirements. 

  • As part of the Network Engineering & Operations (NEO) department, work across FirstEnergy to ensure that communications systems meet business needs and objectives. 

  • Ensure that change management procedures are followed properly. 

 

Applicant Requirements: 

  • Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, RF Systems Engineering or related field, or related work experience.  

  • Class Standing – Senior (Graduating in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024) or Junior (Graduating in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025). 

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. 

  • Strong knowledge of the following: 

  • Basic Network Concepts 

  • PC Usage, Windows 10 operating system preferred 

  • MS Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), MS Outlook 

  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future) 

  

Preferred Skills/Experience: 

  • Basic knowledge of common test equipment (e.g. DMMs, antenna analyzers, spectrum analyzers and RF wattmeters). 

  • Provide network circuit design, platform administration, and support. 

  • Environmental support systems for the technology platforms (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators, etc.) 

  • Core competencies to include interpersonal, communications (written & verbal), presentation, and drafting/drawing (Visio/CAD/GIS) skills. 

  • Circuit design and drawing management tools. 

  • Tools used to monitor, control & track the performance of these circuits and manage the work. 

  • Project management concepts and tools.  

  • Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA); Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).

  • Strong technical writing skills
