FirstEnergy seeks a self-motivated intern with a desire to learn new and proprietary systems, with a strong desire to dig deep into unfamiliar territory.

 

About the Opportunity

 

There are two intern positions available for students interested in supporting IT infrastructure.

  1. Unix/Linux Server Admin Intern – Supporting the installation, maintenance, upgrade, and administration of UNIX/Linux servers in the FirstEnergy enterprise.
  2. ESM (Enterprise Systems Management) Intern – Supporting the technical configuration and administration of FirstEnergy's applications and tools

 

The Unix/Linux Server Admin Intern will participate in the following functions:

  • Build, maintain and troubleshoot FirstEnergy UNIX/Linux server environment.
  • Install, upgrade, configure and maintain server systems hardware and software.
  • Perform the administration of the UNIX/Linux environment including but not limited to patching, troubleshooting, account management, and security
  • Assist in incident management including problem resolution and tracking problems.
  • Utilize monitoring tools to proactively identify problems with systems, applications, and networks.
  • Create, update, and execute change requests, as directed

 

The ESM Intern will participate in the following functions:

  • Work with various software tools (e.g. HPe Network Node Manager i, HPe Operations Manager i, HPe Service Manager, HPe Sitescope, etc.) to monitor servers, databases, network devices and applications.
  • Primary focus will be on operating system monitoring cutovers and enhancements
  • Occasional tasks involving basic coding (Perl, Python, etc.)
  • Deliver IT technology solutions which help achieve business goals.

 

As a FirstEnergy Intern you will also be expected to:

  • Fully participate in the FirstEnergy Co-Op/Intern program mandatory events
  • Utilize knowledge, skills and abilities to work on challenging assignments and contribute to FirstEnergy’s success
  • Gain understanding of the electric utility business and seize the opportunity to explore potential career paths at FirstEnergy
  • Engage in candidate self-assessments and use supervisory feedback to improve your performance
  • Develop career contacts and receive guidance from coaches and peers
  • Network with other students
  • Present to department members and leadership at the end of each session/rotation to highlight projects and contributions.

 

Requirements

 

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college with a major in Computer Science or technology equivalent degree.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)
  • Successful completion of basic Computer Science coursework
  • Must work effectively in a team environment and on concurrent assignments
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of two intern sessions: Spring, Summer or Fall
  • Must be willing to relocate to / reside near the job location for the duration of the assignment (some candidates may be eligible for a living stipend)
  • Positive communication skills (verbal and written) as well as organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet project deadlines
  • Familiarity with the following technologies:
    • Basic network concepts (network switching, routing, management and monitoring)
    • X86 PC or server hardware maintenance
    • High Level UNIX/Linux OS fundamentals
  • Experience with any kind of coding (e.g. Perl, Python, Java, C, shell, etc.)
  • Strong analytical skills to resolve problems and think creatively.
  • Strong communication skills and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects.
  • Highly motivated to work independently and productively, with an aptitude to learn quickly.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet schedules.
  • Ability to work on a team in a virtual environment with remote colleagues utilizing virtual technologies.
