About the Opportunity

 

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. 

 

As part of the Data Network team, the IT Network Engineering & Operations (Network & Transport Specialist) will be responsible for architecture, engineering, design, implementation, operation, maintenance, regulatory compliance and ongoing reliability of Local Area Network (LAN) systems.  This includes network routing & switching, wireless LAN (802.11x) networks, data center networks (Nexus, PODs, etc.) and voice & video services (VoIP, voice mail, voice recorders, phones, IVR, video and satellite).

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Delivering high-performance high-availability LAN systems, in a 24/7 enterprise, fully monitored to achieve service expectations, scalable to business needs and that have appropriate disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Participating in LAN projects to ensure computing and network architecture solutions are solid, well integrated, and comply with technical strategy.
  • Supporting the operational performance and maintenance of existing Data Network systems as well as design and delivery of new products/product enhancements.
  • Evaluate, develop, implement and lead projects that have a significant IT and Business Unit operational impact.
  • Lead IT Networks department in planning activities, provide budget recommendations and monitor performance for the accomplishment of committed results.
  • Provide recommendations and implement action plans to improve Network performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Document existing practices.
  • Apply technical knowledge to promote a reliable network that is and supports a safe work environment.
  • Manage, direct and collaborate with subject matter experts and Network professionals to execute projects.
  • Develop work scopes and proposals and evaluate responses.
  • Understand user requirements and incorporate these requirements into plans and projects.
  • Support Teams in other IT areas.
  • Perform assignments while acting independently.
  • Provide oversight and development of less experience Team members.
  • Provide Pre and Post work peer-review of other Team member’s actions as part of implementation and maintenance projects.
  • Implementing technical standards and regulatory requirements to Data Network systems.
  • Stay current with technology changes and the relationships of technology to emerging business requirements.
  • Leveraging Cisco management tools, HP Operations Manager, HP Project and Portfolio Management (PPM), and other tools used to monitor, control & track the performance of these systems and manage the work.

 

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Provide daily support of the Data Network team in their management of the multiple technology platforms delivering data, voice, video, and computing services to FE employees, contractors, and business partners.
  • Ensuring high level of reliability and availability of these systems. 
  • Manages the expectations of FE business units. 
  • Responsible for system disaster recovery plans.
  • Understands and follows all applicable policies & procedures to effectively manage risk to FirstEnergy’s Data Network environments.

 

 

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor or Associates Degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications or related field, or equivalent experience in a network engineering field.
  • Seven to ten years of professional-level Network experience.
  • Extensive enterprise expert level technical knowledge includes routing and switching equipment, LAN/WAN topologies, network protocols BGP, EIGRP, wireless LAN systems (Cisco wireless a plus), data center networks, and voice & video technologies and services (VoIP, voice mail, voice recorders, phones, IVR, video conferencing systems, and satellite).
  • Knowledge of the OSI reference model.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex enterprise level performance issues and the ability to read sniffer traces.
  • Core competencies include interpersonal, communications (written & verbal) and presentation skills.
  • Ability to apply advanced Network principles and to identify and resolve complex issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills are required, including proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Preferred knowledge includes project management concepts & tools, and environmental support systems for supported technology platforms (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators, etc.).
  • Familiarity with use of Cisco management tools, HP Operations Manager, HP Project and Portfolio Management (PPM), and other tools used to monitor, control & track the performance of these systems and manage the work.
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten to fifteen years of applicable Network experience.
  • Three years of this experience as a Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) professional.
  • Multiple CCIE certifications in the various Technology Tracks (Collaboration, Data Center, Security, Service Provider, etc.)
  • Minimum of three (3) related career experiences (i.e. changes in technical job responsibilities, which may or may not include a change in department/organization).
  • Experience with the design and construction of large multi-state private networks
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable standards, methods and practices unique to a large private voice/data environment.
  • Ability to coordinate work that interface the WAN and Network Transport technologies.
  • Knowledge of CIP standards and compliance regulations a plus.
