Our Corporate Security group provides company-wide support to assist in the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to all FirstEnergy customers. Available 24/7, FirstEnergy’s Corporate Security department is the company’s single point of contact for questions and issues related to physical security, including compliance with the NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) requirements. Corporate Security professionals provide the expertise and skills that enhance and support the security for all FirstEnergy personnel, assets, and day-to-day operations 


As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work at FirstEnergy. Each participant will receive on-the-job training, and challenging assignments to refine skills and round out competencies. Summer Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time opportunities spanning 13 weeks. FirstEnergy offers paid internships to qualified students actively enrolled in an accredited university or college. 


The Physical Security Field Representative Intern position at FirstEnergy will work with the Physical Security Field Support team to support the security best practices for FirstEnergy.  The intern will benefit from on-the-job training and mentoring through learning & assisting personnel by participating in a range of meetings, projects, and initiatives.  The intern will receive the opportunity to build professional relationships and enhance their interpersonal skills.   


Responsibilities of a Physical Security Field Representative Intern:  

  • Enforcement, training, and education of security policies and procedures. 

  • Pro-active support, monitoring, and operation of security & access controls systems, security alarms, badge programming & creation, camera operations, tracking systems, and security support personnel. 

  • Clerical and administrative support as needed. 

  • Perform research and resolution process for exceptions, inquiries, and investigations. 

  • Research and report on intel. 

  • Demonstrate ability to grasp concepts and knowledge of security management practices, operations, and modeling. 

  • Assist with assessments and improvements for security posture. 

  • Elevate unresolved issues/problems to security management team. 

  • Conduct effective, professional, and helpful communication with employees, contractors, visitors, etc. 

  • Work in conjunction with individuals on the team as well as other support teams & business partners to enforce and enhance security best practices. 

  • Assist with alarm monitoring and response at the Security Operations Center (SOC) 

  • Complete projects as assigned. 


Applicant Requirements: 

  • Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college with a major in Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Business, Emergency Management or similar discipline 

  • Class Standing –Junior (Dec 2023 or May 2024 graduation date). 

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.  

  • Valid driver's license 

  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)

  • Able to compose well-written, professional documents and reports with minimal editorial and proofing support 

  • Highly motivated to work independently and productively and learn quickly 

  • Proven team player, contributes to team goals, encourages, and supports team members 

  • Demonstrate strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively participate on a team and in remote meetings and conference calls 

  • Must be able to multitask during emergency & normal operational situations and have the ability to change priorities as needed. 

  • Teamwork, communication, and innovation are essential, as well as taking independent initiative on tasks to be completed.  

  • The student will periodically need to operate their personal vehicle during their assignment; therefore, a valid driver's license and safe driving is required.

  • Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects 

  • Organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet schedules

  • Robust communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively participate on a team and in remote meetings and conference calls 

  • Sound understanding of Microsoft Office line of products, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint 

  • Strong attention to detail 

  • Strong technical writing skills
