About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.


This position can be located in OH, PA, NJ, MD, or WV with travel as needed.


The Manager, Employee Benefits reports to the Director, Total Rewards and is responsible for the strategic design, development, implementation, communication, and ongoing administration of FirstEnergy’s employee benefits programs. This position manages the HR Service Center and a team of employees who specialize in the various areas of benefits, including disability programs and leave management.


Responsibilities include:


  • Leading the development, implementation and administration of health and welfare benefits, including self-insured medical and prescription plans, wellness program, life insurance programs, disability and leave management programs, voluntary benefits, etc.
  • Benchmarking benefit plans and developing sound recommendations for competitive improvements to attract, retain and motivate employees.
  • Overseeing benefits communications, focusing on timely benefits topics, plan education, wellbeing, and healthcare consumerism. 
  • Overseeing the annual open enrollment process and other enrollment strategies and ensuring strong open enrollment communications to educate employees on plan changes, enhancements, and the overall enrollment process.
  • Managing multi-million dollar budgets, and funding activities related to benefit programs as well as coordinating applicable financial analysis.
  • Developing strong vendor partnerships and ensuring that plans are providing optimal value, benefiting the company and plan participants.
  • Evaluating opportunities to improve quality, efficiency and cost for plan administration and benefits provided.
  • Complying with regulations related to benefit programs, including participating in and overseeing audit activities and ensuring timeliness of required filings and notices (e.g., Affordable Care Act reporting, Summary Annual Report (SAR) distribution, PCORI, etc.).
  • Consulting with Legal for benefits matters, compliance activities and review of benefit plan documents.
  • Partnering with Supply Chain to complete RFPs as appropriate, negotiating with benefits vendors, and maintaining related contracts.
  • Advising on eligibility, coverage, claim procedures, and other benefits matters and resolving escalated benefits-related inquiries.




  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business or related discipline and a minimum of 7 years relevant work experience is required.  In lieu of a degree, a high school diploma and a minimum of 10 years relevant work experience is required.
  • Relevant work experience will include prior general business experience and/or broad Human Resources functional knowledge.
  • Knowledge of employee benefits plans and procedures with an understanding of the connections between Benefits and the other functional areas within HR.
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills, in addition to experience preparing and delivering group presentations.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision; self-directed and detail-oriented to effectively oversee multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results within specified time frames.
  • Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations.
  • Ability to solve complex problems, demonstrate sound judgment in decision-making, and follow through on commitments to achieve deliverables.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to develop relationships with a broad range of individuals both internally and externally.
  • Ability to effectively organize, manage and prioritize multiple work assignments and projects and deliver desired results.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint.)
