Location: Akron, OH or Reading, PA


As part of the Data Network team, this engineer is responsible for architecture, engineering, design, implementation, operation, maintenance, and ongoing reliability of Local Area Network (LAN) systems.  This includes network routing & switching, wireless LAN (802.11x) networks, data center networks (Nexus, PODs, etc.), and voice & video services (VoIP, voice mail, voice recorders, phones, IVR, video, and satellite).


  • Delivering high-performance high-availability LAN systems, in a 24/7 enterprise, fully monitored to achieve service expectations, scalable to business needs, and that have appropriate disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Participating in LAN projects to ensure computing and network architecture solutions are solid, well integrated, and comply with technical strategy.
  • Supporting the operational performance and maintenance of existing Data Network systems as well as design and delivery of new products/product enhancements.
  • Implementing technical standards and regulatory requirements to Data Network systems.
  • Staying current with technology changes and the relationships of technology to emerging business requirements.
  • Leveraging Cisco management tools, HP Operations Manager, HP Project and Portfolio Management (PPM), ServiceNow, and other tools used to monitor, control & track the performance of these systems and manage the work.




  • Providing daily support for the Data Network team that supports the many technology platforms delivering data, voice, video, and computing services to FE employees, contractors, and business partners.
  • Ensuring high level of reliability and availability of these systems.  Manages the expectations of FE business units.  Responsible along with others for disaster recovery of these systems.
  • Understanding and following all applicable policies & procedures to effectively manage risk to FE’s Data Network environments.




  • Bachelor or Associates Degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications or related field, or equivalent experience in a network engineering field.
  • CCNP or CCIE certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years relevant experience required.
  • Relevant technical experience includes routing and switching equipment, LAN topologies, network protocols, wireless LAN systems (Cisco wireless a plus), data center networks, and voice & video technologies and services (VoIP, voice mail, voice recorders, phones, IVR, video conferencing systems, and satellite).
  • Strong understanding of BGP and ISIS routing protocols.
  • Knowledge of the OSI reference model.
  • Ability to read sniffer traces to identify complex performance issues is preferred.
  • Preferred experience includes project management concepts & tools, and environmental support systems for supported technology platforms (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators, etc.).
  • Core competencies include interpersonal, communications (written & verbal), and presentation skills.
