The position is within the Ethics & Compliance group and reports to the Director of Ethics and Compliance. It can be located in OH, PA, NJ, MD, or WV, with travel as needed.


The Political Compliance Advisor will be responsible for leading political compliance initiatives for FirstEnergy.  Responsibilities include developing and executing the political compliance strategy, understanding and interpreting political engagement requirements, and working cross-functionally to manage and oversee business activities to ensure compliance with relevant law and regulations.


The Ethics & Compliance (E&C) group works to strengthen the company’s ethics and compliance profile for FirstEnergy’s operating companies. The team interacts with various functions to promote trust and  respect, manage ethics and compliance risks, promote ethical business conduct, develop policies, procedures, and controls, and manage complaints and concerns.  The team also performs risk assessments,  conducts investigations, coordinates training, and manages ethics and compliance communications. This position will be expected to interact with all levels of the organization and focus on political compliance.


Responsibilities include:


  • Developing the political compliance strategy, providing day-to-day leadership for political compliance initiatives, and managing continuous improvement
  • Creating and overseeing the development of the Ethics & Compliance Political Compliance program
  • Leading the development, subsequent iteration, and execution of Political Compliance policies, procedures, and controls
  • Monitoring business activities to ensure compliance with company policies and applicable laws and regulations related to charitable and political giving
  • Coordinating with other functions to identify, communicate, and document key laws and regulations applicable to company interactions with charitable and political entities
  • Monitoring political mandates and applicable laws, rules, and regulations related to charitable and political giving
  • Preparing and filing lobbying registration and disclosure reports
  • Monitoring and tracking charitable and political contributions to ensure compliance
  • Managing outside counsel on compliance investigations, political/charitable ethics, and conflicts of interest
  • Directing Legal and Business Unit responses to government agency inquiries and investigations related to charitable and political giving
  • Supporting prevention, detection, and correction of non-compliance with regulatory requirements related to charitable and political giving
  • Supporting compliance monitoring and testing related to charitable and political giving
  • Exercising sound decision making by developing alternatives and recommendations to improve work processes




  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related discipline is required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited program college or university preferred
  • Minimum of ten years relevant work experience at progressively increasing levels of responsibility is required. Relevant work experience includes experience in ethics and compliance, investigative functions, forensic accounting and audit, and legal.
  • Minimum of three to five years of experience with ethics and/or compliance program development, and/or business process improvement is required
  • Experience within the Utilities or Electricity sectors preferred
  • Superior interpersonal, written, verbal, and oral communication skills
  • Able to build relationships and credibility across the organization
  • Pragmatic with strong problem-solving skills and excellent attention to detail
