Location available in Akron, OH and Fairmont, WV

Our IT focused Electrical Engineering interns work on the systems and applications that control, monitor, and model the flow of power on transmission and distribution electrical networks.


Job duties and responsibilities vary by team. The following are some examples:

  • Provide primary maintenance and support of the network application toolset (network model, state estimator, and contingency analysis)
  • Design, implement, and support substation monitoring and control equipment, such as RTUs and data concentrators.
  • Provide engineering technical expertise to ensure the operational reliability of SCADA systems
  • Design, build, and enhance systems to provide tools for situational awareness of electrical system conditions
  • Perform power system equipment commissioning activities
  • Assist with administration, maintenance, and testing of software
  • Perform data analysis and create reports, scorecards, and historical trends
  • Develop and communicate system documentation, version release notes, and training materials



As a FirstEnergy Intern you will also be expected to:

  • Fully participate in the FirstEnergy Co-Op/Intern program mandatory events
  • Utilize knowledge, skills and abilities to work on challenging assignments and contribute to FirstEnergy’s success
  • Gain understanding of the electric utility business and seize the opportunity to explore potential career paths at FirstEnergy
  • Engage in candidate self-assessments and use supervisory feedback to improve your performance
  • Develop career contacts and receive guidance from coaches and peers
  • Network with other students
  • Present to department members and leadership at the end of each session/rotation to highlight projects and contributions.



  • Must be enrolled in a four-year accredited college / university with a major in Electrical Engineering with a power systems concentration or course work, preferred.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)
  • Successful completion of basic engineering coursework
  • Must work effectively in a team environment and on concurrent assignments
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of two intern sessions: Spring, Summer or Fall
  • Must be willing to relocate to / reside near the job location for the duration of the assignment (some candidates may be eligible for a living stipend)
  • Positive communication skills (verbal and written) as well as organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet project deadlines
