About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.  [SC00]


This position reports to the Corporate Safety Manager and is located at the Corporate Office in Akron, OH.


The Safety Representative position is responsible for providing support to corporate and business unit organization including:

  • Performing complex safety data analysis and reporting
  • Providing subject matter expertise (SME) and direction for worker safety regulations, programs and initiatives (OSHA), and transportation/driver safety (FMCSA – DOT)
  • Managing corporate drug and alcohol compliance program
  • Coordinating and performing industrial hygiene assessments, respiratory fit testing and ergonomics evaluations
  • Researching and benchmarking to develop best practices, safety resources and reference materials
  • Coordinating safety equipment field evaluations and approvals
  • Health and safety auditing to identifying gaps and areas of improvement in safety performance.
  • Participating in and facilitating the investigation of injuries, conditions, and incidents that do or could involve injury or loss to employees or to the general public
  • Performing research and providing technical advice/interpretations on safety regulations.
  • Facilitating root cause analysis for incidents and significant events and devise corrective action plans as needed
  • Ensuring corporate and business office emergency management plans are established and effective
  • Developing educational materials and training to safety representatives and others as needed
  • Working independently to develop solutions and change management plans for complex safety issus including revising or preparing new satefy programs and policies as needed
  • Representing the company on external technical committees (e.g. ASTM) as needed
  • Supporting regional management and labor employee safety committee meetings throughout the company as needed.
  • Assisting with contractor safety management programs as needed
  • Assisting with and participating in safety audits, inspections and federal regulatory investigations as necessary.





  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety or related discipline with minimum 4 years relevant work experience required.  In lieu of Bachelor’s degree (preferred), minimum 7 years relevant work experience required.  Relevant work experience will include working knowledge of OSHA and DOT regulations and FE Corporate safety policies and procedures.
  • Proficient in Access and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.). SAP skills are a plus.
  • Eligible for board certification in safety or industrial hygiene is a plus
  • Certified Utility Safety Administrator (CUSA), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a plus
  • Experience in electrical transmission and distribution or power generation industry or construction support is a plus
  • Basic understanding of industry consensus standards related to safety - American National Standards Institute (ANSI), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC)
  • Solid analytical and quantitative skills required for data analysis, reporting root cause analysis and OSHA record keeping
  • Experience working with bargaining units and skilled crafts
  • Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to communicate effectively with managers, supervisors, employees, regulatory agencies and peers
  • Willing and able to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment (PPE), climb ladders and enter confined spaces, as required
  • Organized self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member in establishing priorities and achieving goals and objectives
  • Ability to work extended hours
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and a personally owned or leased vehicle to commute to various facilities throughout the assigned territory (including out of state)
  • Ability to travel as necessary between plant locations and other facilities, to support corporate and business unit partner needs. Occasional travel, including overnight.
  • Basic presentation skills, ability to work across FE Corporate, results focused, relationship building skills,
  • Possess  knowledge of federal, state, local HS laws and regulations and applicable consensus standards
  • Intermediate knowledge of HS programs and policies
  • Ability to work with peers and management cross functionally on HS issues
  • Work with peers on tracking injuries and illnesses and analyzes alternative solutions
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze safety and industrial data and present findings with supervision
