About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.[SC00]

 

There are a total of 2 openings.

 

The position will report to Manager, Tax Accounting and will be located at the Corporate Office in Akron, Ohio.  It will have primary responsibility for:

  • Overseeing monthly closing process for all taxes (income taxes, gross receipts taxes, property taxes, etc.) and report results to Manager, Tax Accounting, Assistant Controllers and Chief Accounting Officer as appropriate
  • Reviewing and approving work product of junior tax analysts, including journal entries, account reconciliations, taxable income computations, and technical tax accounting analysis as appropriate; 
  • Analyzing main drivers impacting effective tax rate
  • Ensuring compliance with existing tax controls (Sarbanes-Oxley compliance) and proposing additional controls, as needed, in the spirit of continuous improvement     
  • Conducting ASC-740 research, drafting memos to support technical tax accounting positions, and coordinating with Assistant Controller, Corporate
  • Serving as lead for forecasting taxes in support of multiple financial forecasts each year, working with the business planning group, and reviewing the accuracy of tax data input into the UI Planner forecasting tool
  • Coordinating responses to independent auditors
  • Serving as a “thought leader” and mentoring junior tax analysts
  • Effectively communicating with Finance management when called upon to explain complex tax topics
  • Leading special projects within the Tax department, and representing the Tax department on projects within the Controller’s group and across the company
  • Provide outstanding service and responsiveness to internal stakeholders

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
  • Master’s degree in taxation preferred
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant work experience required.  Relevant work experience will include working in public accounting firm or corporate tax or accounting department.
  • Demonstrated significant prior tax experience   
  • In depth understanding of ASC 740 income tax accounting principles
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Advanced Excel spreadsheet skills)
  • Tax return preparation experience preferred
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Strong communication skills; able to contribute as a member of cross-functional teams both within the Tax department and across other areas of the company
