The Supervisor, Digital Communications, will lead a team of marketing and communications professionals focused on leveraging the company’s digital communications assets to effectively market the FirstEnergy’s family of brands and engage with customers and other key stakeholders. Working with the Manager, Customer Communications, this position will develop and oversee the company’s overall web and social media strategy as well as guide the use of digital media resources and video content for broader customer communications and marketing campaigns.

The position is based out of FirstEnergy’s General Office in Akron, Ohio. Remote work will be considered. The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need.  This option is not available in the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oregon or Washington at this time.


Responsibilities include:

  • Serving as lead digital media strategist for the company, guiding the development and implementation of digital marketing strategies that effectively engage customers in their preferred channels
  • Through effective communication and engagement tools, positions FirstEnergy as an energy advisor that our customers can count on for assistance, education and new service offerings
  • Leading research and expansion of social media channel engagement, including implementation of new platforms such as Instagram and Nextdoor, to position FirstEnergy as a digital media leader
  • Overseeing comprehensive review, strategy development and implementation of website redesign to ensure best-in-class web presence
  • Partnering with Customer Experience to design and orchestrate paid digital media campaigns including search, social and various other platforms, directing the activities of in-house team as well as outside agencies retained to support digital media campaigns
  • Establishing and manages comprehensive social media analytics and feedback programs, overseeing development of reporting to support business needs of Communications & Branding as well as company leadership and other business units while optimizing digital channel use
  • Developing and manages budgeting and planning for digital media strategy, including paid social media campaigns
  • Overseeing engagement with state and corporate media relations representatives to share content and enhance storytelling through digital channels
  • Providing key leadership during crisis situations, guiding digital media strategy during major storm events, cyber incidents or other corporate issues
  • Maintaining a consistent voice, message, and brand persona across all digital communication channels
  • Managing the workflow of the digital strategy team, delegating tasks and ensuring business goals, deadlines and performance standards are met
  • Providing coaching and mentoring to develop team members and help them reach their full potential and career goals
  • Reviewing social content ideas, coach team members through the content creation process and serve as main editor for team’s work products
  • Collaborating with other Communications team leadership, including Internal Communications and Corporate Communications, to share ideas and content
  • Fostering productive working relationships with other FirstEnergy business units

Qualifications inlcude:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing or related discipline required
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant work experience required. Relevant work experience will include proven success developing and executing digital strategies
  • Advanced understanding of key social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and each platform’s engagement metrics; proven ability to apply data to improve content performance
  • Strong understanding of website metrics and how to apply them to digital strategy
  • Experience using website content management systems
  • Experience using social media management platforms; Sprinklr knowledge a plus
  • Ability to communicate complex data and insights into digestible terms that can be understood by audiences with varying levels of digital and social media knowledge
  • Proven experience leading and developing a high-performing team of diverse individuals
  • Ability to establish challenging goals and motivate team members to succeed
  • Expert written and verbal communication skills and ability to guide development of compelling digital content
  • Strong editing and analytical skills
  • Good team player with strong organizational and project management experience
  • Experience working with tight deadlines, ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work for self and team
  • Ability to occasionally provide afterhours and weekend support during significant outages, storm events and other crisis situations
  • Willingness to travel to other FirstEnergy locations, as needed
  • Experience in the utility industry a plus but not necessary
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Office 365, SharePoint)
