About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

The Transmission Lines Engineer designs a variety of wood and steel transmission structures and structure foundations and calculates wire sags and clearances using a robust industry-standard software program known as PLS-CADD.  The Engineer directs survey crews and drafting personnel to gather and record data for transmission line design and provides assistance with the preparation of plans for real estate and right of way acquisition, employing skills in GIS and AutoCAD software.  The ability to work independently as well as in teams is a must as the Engineer will coordinate designs with other FirstEnergy areas of responsibility including Transmission Siting and Permitting, Substations, Project Management, Forestry, Real Estate and Construction, as well as the Regional operating companies located across six states.  The Engineer calculates NESC clearance requirements, develops design packages for construction, creates bills-of-material for transmission line projects, creates standards and associated process flows for transmission structures and lines, and assists in implementation activities.  Other duties include analyzing transmission line issues and recommending appropriate solutions and alternate design options.

 

Responsibilities include:
 

  • Developing and maintaining a safe environment for transmission lines to ensure the safety of co-workers, contractors, work crews and the general public.
  • Creating engineering designs and standards for transmission line projects that include wood and steel structure drawings, line plan and profile, wire arrangements, field reports, transmission switch drawings and wire sag charts.
  • Directing survey crews and drafting personnel to gather and record data for transmission line design.
  • Preparing bills-of-material and specifications to procure materials for a transmission line project.
  • Developing and assembling design packages including work scope for construction.  The preferred candidate will have working knowledge of PLS-CADD or the ability and desire to learn PLS-CADD.
  • Supporting work crews during construction including office work and field visits.
  • Reviewing transmission line encroachments to ensure NESC clearance requirements are met.  Coordinating encroachment responses with ROW Services and Transmission Line Maintenance personnel and ensure the public safety is protected.
  • Preparing drawings and documentation necessary to support the applications for engineering permits including highway crossings, railroad crossings, FAA and other related engineering permits. 
  • Analyzing structure assemblies and equipment issues and recommending appropriate solutions and alternate design options.
  • Communicating across business units to ensure project milestones and project in-service dates are met.
  • Working with outside engineering consultants, vendors, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Reviewing manufacturer drawings for compliance with specifications.
  • Assisting ROW Services in the acquisition of transmission line easements by coordinating the preparation of sketches, maps, exhibits and easement plans.
  • Preparing and reviewing cost estimates for transmission line projects.
  • Providing assistance during emergencies and storm related activities.  Storm response duties may include time out of the office for extended stays.
  • Supporting and sustaining FirstEnergy’s high performing organization by contributing to excellent organizational performance through responsible and proactive work efforts.
  • May be required to travel throughout the FE system and to other industry-related activities as necessary supporting FirstEnergy transmission initiatives.                                                         


Qualifications inculde:
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Electrical or Mechanical) from an ABET accredited school required.  Civil Engineering is preferred.  OR BSET (Engineering Technology) with Professional Engineer license (PE) required
  • Minimum 3 years work experience as an Engineer required.
  • Working knowledge of applicable computer software necessary to fulfill job duties including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must embrace a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment for co-workers and the public.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels across the FirstEnergy organization and with manufacturers.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with good verbal skills and writing skills, providing comprehensive project status reports, clear and concise correspondence, and accurate information.
  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.
  • Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem solving skills.  Will acquire skills in PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, MFAD, CREWS, SAP and FileNet.
