This position can be located in OH, Western PA, or WV.
 

The position of Supervisor, Transmission Maintenance requires an individual to be self-directed with a strong ability to manage various maintenance inspection programs, multiple transmission line condition projects coordinated by the Portfolio and Project Management groups within FirstEnergy and remain compliant with all regulatory requirements/reporting. This position requires an in-depth understanding of current transmission maintenance work activities and maintenance inspection requirements.  This position will oversee the work of a staff of engineers and program managers engaged in a wide variety of transmission maintenance activities. This position must provide technical support and training to department personnel, technical support for transmission personnel, and provide technical direction to outside vendors performing transmission line maintenance work activities.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Providing direct leadership to a diverse staff of engineers and program managers.
  • Responsible for assigning and supervising direct report’s projects and work assignments to ensure work is covered technically, completed on schedule and within budget.
  • Routinely meeting with staff members individually to review work assignments, progress on priorities, identify training needs/opportunities and development goals.
  • Administering a safe workplace by ensuring staff is engaged and knowledgeable of company safety practices and the Accident Prevention Handbook. Conduct regular safety meetings with direct reports.
  • Advocating for and lead initiatives to enhance the transmission line asset management processes and procedures.
  • Researching and exploring new technologies that will effectively enable work processes to be automated increasing efficiencies while decreasing the risk of human error.
  • Reviewing and assigning both as found and requested encroachments.
  • Supporting communication across business units regarding transmission line projects, line condition field reviews and line condition project prioritization.  
  • Overseeing development and updates to a five-year transmission line condition project portfolio
  • Overseeing maintenance program activities to assure required inspections are completed on time and regulatory reporting is completed accurately.    
  • Championing improvement of current maintenance processes and procedures to support transmission line performance and operational initiatives.
  • Facilitating learning opportunities for direct reports to expand knowledge base of Transmission Design, Transmission Maintenance Work Practices and Transmission Inspection Practices.
  • Utilizing and developing direct report’s skill sets to support departmental needs across the FE organization.
  • Working directly with outside consultants, vendors, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Ensuring Maintenance Work Practices, Specifications and Standards are up to date and accurate. Reviewing against industry peers, manufacturers’ best practices and industry standards.
  • Developing and displaying expertise in understanding FirstEnergy’s maintenance practices to convey content and reason for the practices to FirstEnergy employees and to outside stakeholders as necessary.
  • Participating in industry (i.e. NATF, EPRI, CIGRE, EEI, etc.) meetings to confirm FirstEnergy has a voice in direction of the industry and ability to take industry best practices and enhance FirstEnergy’s inspection and maintenance programs.
  • Aiding in development of the department budget and report on variances.
  • Supporting communication across business units regarding project needs. Scheduling and chairing meetings with necessary personnel to review and develop transmission line condition project work scope in preparation for presentation to leadership.

  • Engaging in the transmission restoration plan through assignment of staff for back-office support roles and/or field response roles.
  • Willingness to travel throughout organization and service territory and work extended hours, as required

 

Qualifications include:
 

  • BS Degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering, Business Management or Project Management plus four (4) years relevant experience.  In lieu of a college degree, consideration will be given to applicants having an extensive multi-disciplined technical and operational background with eight (8) years relevant experience.  
  • Relevant experience in construction of line and/or substation facilities and/or project related project management experience.  
  • Understanding of contractor management and administration.
  • Financial acumen required related to budgeting and forecasting.
  • Must be self-directed and not dependent on detailed instruction from others.
  • Strong working knowledge of FirstEnergy’s transmission engineering design standards, construction standards and transmission maintenance work practices preferred.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively present subject matter to all levels of management, employees, and outside stakeholders.
  • Must be able to work effectively while managing multiple deadlines.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to develop and maintain relationships across the organization and with outside firms that further facilitate the cooperation needed to complete assigned tasks and that will inspire others to achieve, or exceed, goals.
  • Ability to lead by example and make practical decisions without undue delay based on information available.
  • Ability to coach, counsel, and develop employees.
  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.
  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines; Coach others in effective decision making.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Strong critical thinking skills, communication skills, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Understanding of FirstEnergy’s Manual of Operations, National Electric Safety Code, and OSHA general industry requirements is preferred.
  • A general knowledge of state and federal regulatory requirements that impact the maintenance and operation of transmission line facilities.
