About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

The job of Designer requires an individual to have the ability to perform GIS database administrator duties for the Transmission Mapping group within FirstEnergy.  This position requires a proficiency in the use of ArcMAP with a preference for extensive experience with Java Script and Python coding languages.  This position will require the interpretation of engineering drawings and designs for mapping.  This position will work within a staff of engineers, designers, drafters and specialists, both internal and external, engaged in a wide variety of engineering design and mapping solutions.  This position requires a high degree of technical skills, independent decision making, and project management.

 

Responsibilities include:
 

  • Consulting with internal and external groups to develop architecture and functionality for proposed projects and process improvements within the TAMI web interface.
  • Leading design of database schema and developing process for data migrations.
  • Independently scheduling and maintaining workload and requests from other business units to meet project deadlines.
  • Analyzing engineering issues, structures, equipment, etc., and recommending appropriate mapping solutions and alternate options.
  • Training and performing knowledge transfers for employees in the Transmission Organization.
  • Performing analysis and troubleshooting for issues related to TAMI and other ESRI software products.
  • Working with outside engineering firms, vendors, and other consultants.
  • Providing mapping support to employees to assist in their understanding of standards, procedures, designs, and associated issues.
  • Supporting communication across business units regarding project needs. Convening internal project meetings with necessary parties to assure deliverables support project schedule.
  • Researching and exploring new technologies that will effectively enable work processes to be automated increasing efficiencies while decreasing the risk of human error.
  • Supporting and sustaining FirstEnergy as a high performing organization by contributing to excellent organizational performance and values of FirstEnergy through responsible effective work performance.
  • Communicating Mapping standards to ensure accurate and consistent data.
  • Participating in industry meetings to confirm FirstEnergy has a voice in direction of industry (i.e. ESRI, Utility Consortium, etc.).

 

 

Qualifications include:

 

  • Associate’s degree in a technical discipline required.  Consideration will be given to applicants having a minimum of 2 years utility or GIS Administration experience, or a minimum of 2 years multi-disciplined technical and operational background in lieu of a college degree.
  • Minimum 0-3 years of related design experience
  • Working knowledge of applicable computer software necessary to fulfill job duties including but not limited to Microsoft Office.  Extensive knowledge of ArcMAP.  Knowledge of FileNet, SAP, PLS-CADD, GIS, and AutoCAD, a plus but not a requirement.
  • Valid driver’s license.      
  • Must embrace a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment for co-workers and the public.
  • Must be able to transition from office to field as deemed necessary to aid in the completion of projects.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and be able to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines, unexpected developments, changes in project scope, budget constraints, unforeseen problems and demands on time for work assignments outside of the normal duties.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and develop and maintain relationships across FE, with outside firms and vendors that further facilitate the cooperation needed to complete assigned tasks and that will inspire others to achieve, or exceed, goals.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in teams to design, delegate, and coordinate projects with other FirstEnergy areas of responsibility including Transmission and Substation Engineering, Transmission Maintenance, Forestry, and Real Estate.
  • Ability to make practical decisions without undue delay and based on the best information available at the time that the decision must be made.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with good verbal skills and writing skills, providing comprehensive reports, clear and concise correspondence, and accurate information.
  • Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be self-directed and not dependent on detailed instruction from others.
  • Ability to support numerous locations, must be willing to travel throughout the service area.
  • Must be available for storm duty activities as necessary.
