The Turbine Outage Support role is responsible for driving improvement in turbine outage preparation and execution across FirstEnergy Solution's fleet of power plants, mentoring and developing the site turbine work project management skill base and providing leadership in development of common practices, policies and methods to improve plant safety, reliability, efficiency, and cost and turbine outage performance.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Leading and managing diverse projects / processes / programs while ensuring project deliverables are achieved safely within the approved scope, cost and schedule.
  • Managing and accountability of the Turbine/Generator alliance partner’s performance.
  • Providing subject matter expert support in the main Turbine/Generator Systems and auxiliaries.
  • Educating and directing others on technical subject matters, improving element programs and process effectiveness, and making significant contributions to the achievement of element goals and objectives.
  • Actively seeking ways to build challenge and add value within scope of assignments.
  • Consistently anticipating customer needs and delivering high quality results.
  • Conducting vendor shop visits during repairs of turbine components to ensure adherence to schedule and quality repairs.
  • Leading the preparation and updates to individual project budgets, capital expenditure authorization and associated project budget revisions occur by working with corporate personnel. Fully engages in the capital budgeting process by obtaining and verifying that pertinent data is included in the project.
  • Initiating steps with the responsible parties to have necessary information included in the Request for Project Approval (RPA) including working with Portfolio Management and/or Work Management personnel to develop and update the project schedules and financial forecasts as necessary.
  • Reviewing complex project and contract budgets for adequacy, completeness and other requirements, assuring that required budget exists and project budget revisions are initiated as needed. Identifying and developing high level solutions to items that may impact project schedule or cost and addressing with responsible parties.
  • Ensuring the documentation, scheduling, and disposition of open items applicable to department’s area of functional responsibility are completed.
  • Coordinating pre-engineering site visits to ensure that designs are appropriate and based upon actual field conditions.
  • Traveling to various off-site locations as well as office locations, training facilities and plant sites when requested.
  • Negotiating approvals from affected departments to support the proposed schedule and resource requirements, including the review and approval of project plans.
  • Ensuring adequate staffing and participation of project team.
  • Overseeing the activities of consultants and contractors, coordinating assignments to ensure policies and standards are followed. Notifies the project team of additional resources or requirements necessary to meet the project scope or schedule.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET accredited school.
  • A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience is required, 3 of which must be turbine or generators experience. 1-2 years as a Turbine / Generator Project Manager is plus.
  • Advanced degree or professional certification is a plus.
  • Experience working in a Nuclear Generating facility is a plus
  • Working knowledge of the purpose, function, and operating characteristics of equipment and systems, (turbines, generators, feed pump turbines, valves and auxiliaries) as well as working knowledge of construction methods, maintenance practices, service practices, standards and procedures.
  • Skills in the development, collection, organization, and analysis of information from a variety of sources to develop reports, providing information on backlog and productivity.
  • Strong analytical skills and work effectively with engineering and management personnel, along with interfacing and working cooperatively with customers, contractors and the general public, in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Able to understand project requirements including the impact of labor, material and equipment resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret work requests, engineering drawings, schematics, equipment instruction manuals and procedures to develop accurate work plans.
  • A demonstrated questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.
  • Strong communication, analytical and technical abilities.
  • Able to develop effective working relationships with employees at all levels of FES.
  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines
  • Able to coach others in effective decision making
