The Advanced Communications Rep., State Communications, is responsible for developing and implementing external communications that support FirstEnergy’s Maryland and West Virginia service areas (Mon Power and Potomac Edison).

In this role, the ideal candidate will possess a strong ability to work with team members, business leadership and local media markets on external communications that positively impact the brand of FirstEnergy, its utilities and its regulated generation assets in West Virginia. This includes working with Internal and External Communications team members to collaborate on content that builds positive media attention in Maryland and West Virginia. He/she also will be responsible for developing and maintaining strong relationships with local media to drive the publication of engaging news stories that support key company initiatives.

 

The candidate will also support other FirstEnergy business units who interface with the public, elected officials and regulatory agencies to ensure external messages about the company are consistent, clear and aligned. He/she will consult with utility leadership to provide strategic advice on external communications issues.

 

This candidate will be a strong communicator with experience producing high-quality written content and speaking publicly on key issues. He/she must also have a general understanding of current media trends, as well as a willingness to tell stories through new media such as video, digital and social media channels. The individual must be self-driven, while also adept at working with others to strategize, identify pitfalls and develop solutions that result in clear, concise messaging on specific and sometimes tight deadlines.

 

The position reports to the Supervisor, State Communications, and can be located in Fairmont, W.Va., Williamsport, Md., or Greensburg, Pa.

 

 Responsibilities include:

  • Develop strategies that earn positive news stories supporting key company initiatives
  • Draft, edit and implement news releases, fact sheets, video scripts and newsletter copy that is accurate, grammatically correct and completed on time
  • Cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with print, television and radio media
  • Monitor media and social media discussions on utility topics and leverage insights to strengthen FirstEnergy’s communications approach
  • Foster productive working relationships with other FirstEnergy work groups to identify utility operations, employees and interactions with outside organizations that can be promoted at the local level
  • Consult with regional presidents and their leadership teams to ensure consistent message is conveyed to media, employees, customers, local officials and regulators
  • Oversee media training and coaching for company spokespersons, as needed
  • Proactively identify issues and pitfalls before they occur and develop appropriate responses
  • Participate in company committees/task forces, as needed
  • Provide support during large scale outages or other significant events as part of the External Communications Emergency Response Team

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or related discipline required (advanced degree a plus)
  • Minimum 7 years relevant work experience required.  Relevant work experience will include high-level communication skills and proven media relations experience
  • Strong writing and verbal skills and ability to craft compelling, impactful content based on conducting research and interviewing subject matter experts
  • Strong editing and analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of social media tools and ability to incorporate video/photos into story content
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various groups in the organization or on a self-directed basis
  • Ability to stay poised and on-message when faced with difficult situations relating to storm outages, disgruntled customers, employee issues and unpopular company decisions
  • Experience working with tight deadlines, ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work
  • Expected to respond to weekend and afterhours media calls on a rotational basis
  • Ability to independently work extra hours during prolonged electric system outages or other emergency situations
  • Willingness to travel to other FirstEnergy locations, as needed or during crisis situations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Office 365, SharePoint)
