About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.  [SC00]

 

This position is with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. and is in the Corporate Claims Group.  The position reports to the Director, Corporate Claims. The position will be located in Greensburg, PA or Reading, PA.

 

Corporate Claims investigates and manages the defense of legal actions and major claims by third parties against the Company and negotiates settlements to satisfy certain claims. This group analyzes information, reviews legal documents, interviews relevant parties and consultants, attends depositions and settlement conferences, and manages and supports outside legal counsel on legal matters. Corporate Claims also oversees the prosecution of legal actions against third parties. The department works closely with multiple areas in each operating company, including Regional Claims and Engineering departments.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Investigate, manage and direct the defense of legal actions and major claims initiated by third parties against the Company
  •  Represent the Company in legal disputes and transactions with opposing counsel
  • Participate in mediations and settlement conferences and negotiate settlements
  • Assist more experienced attorneys in preparing and conducting litigation
  • Analyze information, legal documents, interview relevant parties and consultants and attend depositions and trials
  • Evaluate and assess merits of claims and defenses under applicable law and make reasoned recommendations for resolution strategy
  • Work with and provide legal advice to multiple business units and multiple operating companies
  • Conduct legal research
  • Prepare and conduct training with operating companies and other internal clients
  • Understand and manage work according to departmental budget

 

 

Qualifications:

  • JD degree from an accredited law school required.  Active license in PA and/or NJ required.
  • Minimum 2 years relevant work experience required.  Relevant work experience will include practicing law and experience with investigation and management of defense of claims.
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities, including problem solving and decision making
  • Demonstrated proficiency in legal research
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Work, PowerPoint).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels and with varying backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and prepare company witnesses for testimony
  • Prior experience with mock jury exercises preferred
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality
  • Ability to work with limited supervision
  • Strong team player
  • Problem solver, seeking creative solutions
