About the Opportunity

The IT Standards internship is on the Reliability Standards Team. The IT Standards Analyst’s job is maintaining, assessing and improving the compliance posture for FirstEnergy Systems with emphasis on North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Standards and SOX.


Overview of the IT Standards Analyst Intern:

This position is accountable for providing general administrative and analytical support for NERC CIP compliance program implementation efforts. The IT Standards Analyst Intern wants to be in the technology side of a business but wants to focus on utilizing their analyst skills. Due to the critical nature of compliance, it is important that the Standards Analyst loves structure, is organized and detail oriented. 


As an intern, you will:

  • Learn the business processes that you and your team are supporting.
  • Learn the technology that supports the business processes.
  • Create and maintain device inventories and attributes in the IT Service Manager application
  • Assist in gathering evidence needed for audits.  This often requires querying a database to extract data then parsing and doing analysis of the data in Excel
  • Create and update periodic score cards
  • Assist in the creation and development of procedures and other documents

In this position, you will not be writing code. This position is for the analytical thinker who loves learning business processes and new technology.




  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college with a major in Management Information Systems, Information Systems Management, Business degree with a minor in a technology program, or an equivalent degree.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Strong background and experience with personal computer hardware, operating systems and application software (office productivity tools) and databases
  • Strong analytical skills to resolve problems and think creatively.
  • Basic understanding of the software development life cycle from requirements gathering to implementation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to make formal presentations to various audiences.
  • Strong communication skills and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects.
  • Highly motivated to work independently and productively, with an aptitude to learn quickly.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet schedules.
  • Ability to work in a virtual environment with remote colleagues utilizing virtual technologies.
  • Sound understanding of Microsoft Office line of products, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Able to work in a team environment with a constant focus on safety.
