The Scientist – Chemical (Power Plant Chemist) has overall responsible for the safe, efficient, lawful, and cost-effective sampling, analysis, and reporting related to water, fuel, ash, and sampling program performed by the generation facility. This position reports to the Tech Service Supervisor and will provide support to the plant staff in operations, maintenance, business, engineering, and environmental functions while ensuring conformance with all facility contracts, permits, and safety regulations. Furthermore, the Power Plant Chemical Engineer will ensure compliance with federal, state, local laws, and established company procedures.


The successful candidate will be required to have experience in Power Plant Boiler Water Chemistry, Lab Functions, Powdex System Operation, FGD (Flue-gas desulfurization) System Chemistry, RO System, DI System and Title V Compliance.



  • Performing daily sampling and analyses associated with fuel, water, air and environmental treatment program
  • Submit pertinent reporting (monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual)
  • Exercising laboratory quality assurance/quality control for all test methods used in the performance of job duties
  • Overseeing and sometimes conducting a chemical inventory and ordering chemicals
  • Overseeing sampling and analyses of: cooling towers, glycol system, U2A reactors, Powdex, RO system, mobile DI trailer, FGD, generator stator cooling water, condensate system, feedwater system, fire suppressant foam system
  • Oversee and assist in the metal wash water treatment process
  • Assisting in special studies and performing investigations required to resolve non-compliance process or environmental events, equipment failures, as well as new or established treatment programs
  • Makes recommendations for improvement or correction to appropriate personnel based on the results of these investigations
  • Maintaining adequate documentation to support all work performed such that reference by internal and external customers or regulators is available as needed
  • Performing some mechanical and electrical/controls work
  • Develop and maintain the Title V data, documents, and reports for the station.
  • Any other duties assigned for which the selected individual is qualified



  • Degree majoring in chemistry or other similar degree with a focus on chemistry.
  • Mathematical skills required to perform reagent dilutions and analytical statistical calculations.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory procedures, proper techniques, and analytical instrumentation including bench and online equipment.
  • Knowledge on the proper use, handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Knowledge of electrical/mechanical equipment, test instrumentation, and measurement devices.
  • Proficient in the use of computers including Word, Excel, etc.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a power plant is desireable
  • Ability to cover afternoon, night, and weekend shifts when required.
  • Ability to qualify in the use of mobile equipment (fork trucks).
  • Possess excellent skills in all analysis procedures for water, fuel, ash, and statutory environmental issues
  • Exposure to SAP is desirable
  • Knowledge of Hazard Waste Management
  • Excellent communication, leadership, teamwork, and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Help train other employees as needed
