About the Opportunity

This is an open position at the Harrison Power Station with Mon Power, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FOS]

 

The plant safety consultant at the Harrison Power Station is responsible for managing the Regulated Generation Safety and Health Program. The individual will provide the station with subject matter expertise for safety, health and human performance.  The plant safety consultant will serve as a resource to management, leadership, supervision, and union / hourly employees in the direction, planning, development and coordination of the company’s safety programs. In addition, they will engage employees, visitors and contractors at all levels to promote a proactive safety culture where hazard exposure is identified and controlled or eliminated.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Providing technical / analytical guidance regarding OSHA regulations, as well as applicable consensus standards (i.e., NFPA, ASTM, ANSI, etc.).
  • Performing as a Safety and Health Subject Matter Expert (SME) with the ability to research and present regulatory and technical information.
  • Monitoring and communicating regulatory requirements, as they pertain to the business.
  • Providing sound recommendations, innovative solutions, and competent technical guidance resulting in process improvement and/or exposure reduction.
  • Collaborating with Power Station Leadership, Contractor Companies (as needed), FE Contractor Safety, and other FirstEnergy Business Units (as needed) to develop Contractor safety and health programs designed to resolve business issues and promote continuous improvement.
  • Leading / supporting Power Station safety and health program assessments. 
  • Assisting Business Unit Leadership in promoting/enhancing knowledge of and conformity with Safety and Health programs, requirements, and expectations.
  • Providing consultation during the analysis of Employee / Contractor events and assisting in the development of action plans to prevent recurrence, as needed.
  • Leading or engaging with root cause analysis as needed.
  • Analyzing Safety data, including observations and performance. Provide reports as needed.
  • Assisting in developing annual Industrial Hygiene sampling plan to include health hazard assessments, audiogram, respiratory protection program, employee coaching and counseling.
  • Actively developing and implementing safety programs and policies. 
  • Integrating strategic concepts into safety activities.
  • Developing high-level solutions for complex assignment.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health (Industrial Hygiene), or related discipline, with a minimum of 4-7 years of relevant work experience is required. Master’s degree preferred.  In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree (preferred), a minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience in required. 
  • In depth knowledge of safety and industrial hygiene regulations (OSHA General Industry and Construction) and safe work practices,  OSHA’s Electrical Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution regulations (Subpart R and V) (preferred).
  • Basic understanding of industry standards related to Health & Safety including American National Standards Institute (ANSI), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Knowledge of Human Performance Tools and Principles, Root Cause Analysis.
  • Experience managing Multi-Employer Worksites, rules and regulations of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), Department of Labor and the Workers Compensation laws of WV, preparing and delivering presentations and demonstrations to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment, including leading teams, verbal and written communication skills,
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and activities. Certified Safety Professional (preferred).OSHA 500 Authorized Instructor for Construction (preferred)
