This is an open position with Toledo Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.


  1. Duties


Leads and coaches the activities of, and works with other Fleet Services employees to carry out work assignments independently and with a team to complete the maintenance, mechanical repair, inspection and testing of all types of mechanized equipment.  Assists in annual and periodic nondestructive testing (NDT), load and performance testing of aerial equipment as assigned; performs other duties such as:


  1. Receive and coordinate work assignments; obtain any special instructions from customers and supervision; plans assigned work and instruct other employees in the safe and proper performance of work and work practices, reports on work or work progress.


  1. Overhaul, repair and adjustment to all type of internal combustion engines; insert, remove, install, replace and fit all component parts, units and assemblies; repair component parts, units and assemblies.


  1. Inspect, install, remove and overhaul equipment such as: brake systems and associated equipment, differential and suspension equipment, power-takeoff equipment, radiators and cooling system equipment, automatic transmissions and fluid couplings, drive assemblies and associated equipment,


  1. Diagnose problems encountered with automotive, diesel and other powered equipment, including obscure faults, making necessary repairs and adjustments, tuning motors and making road tests to determine unit performance.


  1. Perform electric arc and acetylene welding, cutting, brazing and soldering associated with mechanical repair.  Operates and demonstrates competency with plasma cutter and other welding equipment such as mig, tig, etc.


  1. Operate power shop equipment.  Perform minor repairs, adjustments and maintenance of shop equipment.


  1. Perform all required housekeeping tasks necessary to maintain work area in safe, clean and hazard free fashion.


  1. Remain alert to and report any and all abnormal conditions relating to the safe and proper operation of vehicles and work equipment.


  1. Assists with, annually, and as needed, all phases of NDT, such as acoustic emissions, ultra-sonic, magnetic particle, etc., associated with inspections and static load testing of all aerial equipment such as: fiberglass and steel booms, augers, hydraulic hose, welds, cables, buckets and all related attachments, in accordance with established industry practice, American National Standards Institute and Corporate requirements;


  1. Assists with dielectric testing on all insulated aerial devices in accordance with established industry practice, American National Standards Institute and Corporate requirements;


  1. Demonstrates knowledge of test equipment associated with inspection and care of aerial equipment;


  1. Prepares reports and maintains records associated with work activities; reports abnormal unsafe conditions observed or encountered;


  1. Trains, directs and evaluates the activities of employees assigned to assist in performance of Fleet Services repair activities;


  1. Performs other duties in accordance with the Section of the Foreword to the Job Manual entitled “Duties” and;


  1. Performs similar or less skilled work.


B. Qualifications


Must meet Company’s requirements as to General Qualifications; must have all qualifications of Journeyman Fleet Service Mechanic; and in addition:


  1. Must have a least five years experience as Journeyman Fleet Services Mechanic or equivalent, (completed certified apprentice program or demonstrated competency)


  1. Must have demonstrated aptitude for leadership, customer service and ability in the performance of a Fleet Services Specialist.


  1. Must have customer-focused behavior and demonstrated skills to obtain and maintain harmony and cooperation with others with whom work must be coordinated, and effectively work under time, volume or economic constraints.


  1. Must have demonstrated behavior and actions to:


    1. Direct and counsel the activities of employees in an effective and satisfactory manner;


    1. Receive and accurately interpret and pass on orders and instructions in a manner that will obtain satisfactory and safe work results from employees under his or her direction;


    1. Plan work assignments to obtain safe and effective work results;


    1. Produce legible, logical, concise and accurate reports and records;


    1. Interpret and work from complex drawings, prints and specifications; and generate and read, NDT results


    1. Progress in and satisfactorily complete the prescribed training or development courses required by the Company.


    1. Possess the ability to acquire and maintain Level I, NDT Technician status as outlined in the American Society for Nondestructive Testing standard SNT-TC-1A


  1. Must have demonstrated the ability to perform detailed hydraulic system tests, repairs and adjustments;


  1. Must have working knowledge of:


    1. Inspection and test procedures for all types of aerial equipment, and


    1. The function, care and operation of equipment utilized for testing aerial equipment.


  1. Must possess basic knowledge of the ASTM Standards, American National Standards Institute and corporate published standards, which pertain to aerial equipment.
