About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.  [SC00]


The position reports to Supervisor, ED/State Communications and can be located in Morristown or Holmdel, NJ.


Responsibilities include:

  • Implementing strategies that earn positive news stories supporting key company initiatives
  • Developing and executing comprehensive communications plans on a variety of topics
  • Leading development of news releases, fact sheets, video scripts and newsletter copy that is accurate, grammatically correct and completed on time
  • Cultivating and maintaining good working relationships with print, television and radio media
  • Strong ability to multi-task about a variety of subjects simultaneously
  • Fostering productive working relationships with other FirstEnergy work groups to identify and develop internal subject matter experts
  • Consulting closely with regional presidents and their leadership teams to ensure consistent message is presented to media, employees, customers, local officials and regulators.
  • Overseeing media training and coaching company spokespersons, as needed
  • Proactively identifying issues and pitfalls before they occur and developing appropriate responses
  • Learning about FirstEnergy’s utility operations, employees and interactions with outside organizations that can be promoted at the local level
  • Participating on company committees/task forces, as needed
  • Managing vendors



  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related discipline is required.  Advanced degree a plus.
  • Minimum 10 years professional work experience required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Office 365, SharePoint)
  • Proven media relations experience preferred; experience with New Jersey media a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with a demonstrated competency in writing clear, persuasive, informative and compelling copy
  • Energy industry experience helpful
  • Experience with federal Incident Command System structure a plus
  • Working knowledge of social media tools.  Providing content for company Twitter, Facebook and other social media tools
  • Competency in using iPhone for taking photos and videos
  • Ability to stay poised and on-message when faced with difficult situations relating to storm outages, disgruntled customers, employee issues, and unpopular company decisions
  • Experience working with tight deadlines, ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with employees at all levels within the organization
  • Expected to participate in weekend and afterhours media on call rotation
  • Ability to independently work long hours during prolonged electric system outages or other emergency situations
  • Willingness to travel to other FirstEnergy locations, as needed, during crisis situations
  • Ability to take technical information and make it understandable for a broader audience
