About the Opportunity

This is an open position with Penelec, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., in our Johnstown, Pennslyvania Service Center.   [PN]

 

Responsibilities:

  • Installs, replaces, services, tests, adjusts and repairs all types of electrical, electromechanical, electronic, microprocessor, and computerized devices, testing apparatus, instruments, control and protective relays, electrical system switchgear controls and other control equipment and circuitry used throughout the Penelec system under guidance as a learning employee.
  • Assists in preparation of written procedures required for coordinating controls equipment additions or modifications and energizing new or modified substation equipment in non-EHV facilities.
  • Becomes familiar with system reliability standards to address compliance with PAPUC, FERC, NERC, PJM, RFC and similar governing bodies.
  • Performs tests such as ratio, polarity, phase angles, insulation resistance on various electrical equipment.
  • Proves control wiring in connection with the installation of relays, instruments and control equipment, comparing schematics, wiring diagrams and instruction books for correspondence to determine that equipment meets design requirements and practical operating requirements.
  • Performs the appropriate tests and checks on current, potential and power circuits in new installations before circuits are energized.
  • Prepares the required records, reports, drawings or other data after the completion of new equipment checkout and installation.
  • Prepares the required records and reports for equipment inspection, testing and troubleshooting.
  • Maintains substation equipment, exclusive of SCADA equipment, and networks to ensure reliable data availability to FE System Operators and other independent system operators.

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Educational Requirements:  AS Electronics Technology or BS Electronics Engineering Technology degrees is preferred; AAS degree in a science, technology, utility discipline or equivalent US Military Technical Training is minimum required for consideration or relevant industry experience.
  • Must successfully complete an entrance exam.
  • Must work safely following safety rules and regulations.
  • Must possess the ability to safely operate motor vehicles.
  • Must have an advanced knowledge in elements of applied electricity including AC and DC circuits.
  • Must demonstrate a questioning attitude to learn, produce results and develop relationships.
  • Must understand the practices, principles of operation and the proper application of equipment as prescribed by the company for safety, first aid and rescue.
  • Must have a basic understanding of National Electric Code and NESC.
  • Must be able to interpret complex prints and specifications.
  • Must be able to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all seasons.
  • Must prepare legible and accurate reports using paper documents and mobile computer.
  • Reside within a 40-minute travel time of the service center location.
  • Must successfully pass written and hands on tests and submit to our pre-employment physical and substance screenings.
  • Must pass a background investigation, which will include a driver’s abstract from Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles.
