About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.  [FEU]

 

This position is accountable for supervising, training and directing a staff of electrical engineers engaged in providing field engineering services and technical support for the maintenance, repair, construction, testing, and commissioning of substation equipment at substations and switchyards primarily in the Penelec service territory.  In addition to the responsibilities of supervising FirstEnergy employees, this position is responsible for the hiring, oversight, direction and ultimate separation of contract commissioning engineers working under this position.  The staff of field engineers, which report to service centers in Pennsylvania, spend greater than 50% of their time remote from their desk, working out of personal vehicles and the supervisor serves as a central touchpoint with the office, providing much of the daily assigning, mentoring and leadership through cellular phone conversations, texts and emails.

 

 

Responsibilities:
 

  • Providing direct leadership to a staff of electrical engineers (both internal employees and contractors), assisting them in properly applying their engineering skills and operational knowledge in the identification and resolution of technical field problems within a substation environment.
  • Managing the work assignments of this diverse group of engineers with varying skill sets and experience that report to locations throughout the service territory to ensure that work assignments are covered technically while also providing opportunities for personal and technical growth.
  • Routinely meeting with staff individually, both in the field and at remote reporting locations, observing work methods and skills first hand in order to obtain a good understanding of their abilities as well as their areas that need strengthening.
  • Conducting regular staff meetings over phone and through other electronic means with field engineers to disseminate information evenly, share work experiences and to foster a team environment.
  • Assigning and monitoring engineering staff involved in providing commissioning services for substation assets up to and including 500 kV.  This includes evaluating their development of detailed commissioning checklists and assisting them, as needed, in resolving design and construction problems that arise.
  • Regularly capturing and consolidating staff accomplishments and communicating up through various methods including monthly reports and participation in Manager Staff meetings.
  • Administering a safe workplace by ensuring staff is engaged and knowledgeable of company safety practices and is taking an active role when in the field.  This includes the sponsoring of regular staff safety meetings and the forwarding and dissemination of lessons learned among the assigned staff.
  • Actively promoting a workplace free from discrimination and harassment where the employees treat each other with respect and where successes are celebrated and where challenges are opportunities for development.
  • Actively partnering with staff to assist them in creating priorities, developing goals, assessing progress, and providing meaningful feedback.  Furthermore, supporting FirstEnergy’s Pay for Performance process through the proper assessment of staff’s contributions to FirstEnergy’s success and their own career development.
  • Overseeing the review of technical substation equipment field reports and tests and providing recommendations for corrective actions to improve equipment reliability and safety.
  • Developing and maintaining a strong working relationship with the Substation Services Management Teams at Penelec so as to be in the best position to assist them technically in their day-to-day work tasks.
  • Developing and displaying expertise in understanding FirstEnergy’s maintenance practices so as to convey both their content and the reason for the practices to both FirstEnergy employees, but also to outside stakeholders as necessary.
  • Sharing in the responsibility for seeking improvement in existing technical programs and processes owned and/or administered by Transmission and Substation Services.
  • Supporting the emergency plan through the assignment of staff to fill emergency response roles including hazard responders.
  • Producing results that have a direct, positive impact on the Company.
  • Willing to travel throughout the FirstEnergy system including periodic overnight stays.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited school required.  Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) preferred.
  • A Professional Engineering (PE) License in one of the states served by FirstEnergy (Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland or New Jersey).  Consideration will be given for a seasoned engineering applicant without a PE provided they commit to obtaining a PE within 18 months of job acceptance.
  • Minimum of 7 years related experience.
  • A solid working knowledge of electrical engineering with a focus on power and control engineering, Substation construction methods, substation maintenance practices and general substation operations.
  • Strong organizational and tactical skills
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; Ability to effectively present complex subject matter to all levels of management and to outside stakeholders

  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines; Coach others in effective decision making
  • Must live within a 45 minute commute of assigned work location

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:
 

  • Familiarity with the understanding, application, testing, and communication of microprocessor based protection and control schemes.
  • Familiarity with the installation, maintenance practices and strategies applied on major substation equipment including transformers and breakers.
  • Familiarity in the use of standard electrical test equipment and methods to troubleshoot and commission electrical equipment in substations and power plants. Types of equipment including but are not limited to protective relaying and control schemes, power transformers, distribution and EHV breakers, and mobile substations.
  • Understanding of FirstEnergy’s Manual of Operations
  • A general knowledge of regulatory requirements from both state and federal agencies that impact the design, maintenance and operations of transmission and distribution substations.
