This position reports to the Supervisor, Compliance Field Support & Physical Security. Primary area of responsibility is the western and central Ohio region but can include travel to any FE territory.

The Physical Security Field Representative is the primary point of contact for all security and compliance related issues within the service territory. The Physical Security Field Representative travels through the operating companies to ensure compliance to corporate and regulatory standards, as well as maintaining security technology equipment.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Ensuring effective regulatory compliance to North American Reliability Corporation (NERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Standards by providing guidance to support and enhance operations business unit’s risk management, cyber, information, physical and personnel security programs
  • Maintaining FE compliance policies, programs, procedures, and guidelines related to the NERC CIP Standards and to physical security best practices
  • Preparing for, coordinating, and supporting compliance audits conducted by internal resources, consultants, or regulatory organizations
  • Working with responsible FE organizations to coordinate resolving physical security technology compliance issues, developing improvement recommendations, and creating mitigation plans
  • Investigating and documenting root cause analysis to submit potential violations to FERC Compliance and ensuring they are tracked for timely resolution and fully documented in auditable records
  • Utilizing FE compliance technology (RAAD, ProWatch, Salto) to assign, track and monitor compliance efforts
  • Performing regularly scheduled maintenance activities on physical technology equipment at diverse locations
  • Creating evidence documentation used to support the completion of these processes for annual CIP maintenance and testing program
  • Performing physical security assessments to identify risks to security and compliance, while working with local management and the Physical Security Technology group to propose remediation activities
  • Escorting security technology vendors performing maintenance and installation of equipment
  • Escorting visitors who do not have authorized unescorted access to CIP locations, as needed
  • Operating as the regional entity and single point of contact of all security and compliance related issues, including implementation of resolution for security issues
  • This is a field position requiring travel to FE locations and can include overnight stays. 


The Physical Security Field Representative IV level will be expected to perform all of the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner than a level III.


Qualifications at the Level III include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline along with a minimum of 4 years related experience to the responsibilities above. In lieu of a degree, 7 years related experience required.
    • Related Experience includes, but is not limited to: knowledge of NERC and CIP Compliance, physical and personal security, compliance, investigations, inspections and security technologies.
  • Experience in facilitating creative problem-solving sessions
  • Demonstrate strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to write & present general training communications
  • Ability to write and follow work plans
  • Ability to research, analyze and resolve access concerns independently
  • Ability to work with cross functional groups
  • Commitment to providing quality service and deliverables in a timely manner
  • Demonstrate strong time management skills
  • Must be able to multitask during emergency & normal operational situations and can change priorities as needed
  • Desire to continue to learn, grow, and work across FirstEnergy & deliver results
  • Teamwork, communication, and innovation are essential, as well as taking independent initiative on tasks to be completed
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (i.e. MS Office, Outlook, FileNet P8, MS Project and Vision, etc.)
  • Ability and willingness to be available for call-in and after-hours work, if needed
  • This is a field position requiring travel to FE locations and can include overnight stays. 


Qualifications at the Level IV include all of the above plus:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with a minimum of 7 years related experience. In lieu of a degree, 10 years related experience required
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of compliance related to the NERC CIP standards
  • Ability to think technically, research, analyze, and document findings
  • Highly motivated; ability to work in a more independent manner with a high level of productivity
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively annotate finding in both written and verbal form
  • Ability to write a professional and technical level to ensure a consistent understanding of the subject matter across multiple knowledge levels
