About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co. a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

The Supervisor for BETA Lab's Oil and Fuel Testing Unit has responsibility for testing and analytical activities in support of utility operations, maintenance, and construction. Customers include Operating Companies, Transmission, Regulated Generation, and other FE business units.  This position is responsible for supervision of laboratory technicians and specialists analyzing transformer (insulating) oil, lubricating oil, coal, fly ash, diesel fuel and regulated generation plant reagents like quick lime. 

NOTE:  This is an on-site position, leading technicians, and specialists at BETA Lab in Mayfield Ohio.  


The successful applicant must be willing to support and coordinate activities after-hours and weekends if customer needs arise.  


Responsibilities Include:

  • Demonstrating and promoting FE safety behaviors and ensuring activities are safely performed including environmental compliance.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory and quality requirements.
  • Encouraging diversity and an inclusive environment.
  • Delivering accurate results and reports, daily, to customers in a high sample throughput work area.
  • Responding and supervising resources during emergency conditions to support public safety and system reliability or regulated plant operation.
  • Promoting continuous improvement and effective use of Human Performance tools.
  • Enhancing the technical knowledge of employees and mentor successor(s).
  • Reviewing and approving technical reports, data, procedures, etc.
  • Supervising assigned personnel including scheduling, development, coaching and evaluation.
  • Formulating short- and long-range plans for the lab unit that align with FE operational needs.
  • Monitoring unit performance, reporting progress, making performance corrections.
  • Developing and maintaining operating budgets.
  • Performing periodic benchmarking for best practices.
  • Maintaining a high level of scientific protocols and methods commensurate with competitive commercial laboratories.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline in required. Additionally - a minimum of 10 years of responsible related positions/ experience, of which five years shall be in laboratory or science-based testing environments. A master's degree is a plus.
  • Highly driven, self-motivated, and enthusiastic leader capable of communicating, motivating, and driving teams toward positive change and improvement.
  • Working level knowledge and experience with laboratory test instruments and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).  LABWORKS LIMS is a plus.
  • Knowledge of or able to learn computer applications for lab instruments and processes (TOA4, Machinery Health Manager-OilView, Agilent OpenLabs CDS, and Mass Hunter Software).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize work for efficient and safe operations and customer requirements.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with customers, management, peers, and employees.
  • Demonstrated leadership, professionalism, teamwork and customer service skills.
  • Industry experience with practical knowledge of oil and fuel analytical laboratory equipment, test methods and ASTM specifications.
  • Experienced in project planning, resourcing, coordination, scheduling and budgeting in a high throughput environment.
    • The most relevant related work experience would include knowledge of Gas Chromatography, EPA Accreditations including PA Chapter 252 and WV 47CSR32, PCB analysis in Oils and Soils using EPA Methods, Fluid Quality testing of Insulating Oil, routine testing of Lubricating Oil, and Coal analysis.
