About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [PEN]


Electrical and Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Design Engineer at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Perry, Ohio.


Responsibilities include:


  • Developing Electrical and I&C engineering-specific solutions in support of plant design modifications, plant activities that are in the 12-week work management schedule and for refueling outages for various systems and components for a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) Nuclear power generating facility.
  • Leading design and project activities for analog to digital control system upgrades for process control systems.
  • Preparing engineering change packages, emergent temporary modifications, non-complex engineering calculations, vendor technical manual updates, and performing equivalency evaluations for obsolete equipment and design specification alterations.
  • Updating design/licensing basis documentation, including design drawings, vendor drawings, configuration management database and the Updated Safety Analysis Report (USAR).
  • Performing independent reviews and design verification of peer work products.
  • Completing 10CFR50.59 documentation, preparation, and verification.
  • Completing operability determinations and functionality assessments in accordance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) RIS 2005-20.
  • Developing and completing investigations and corrective actions in accordance with the Corrective Action Program related to equipment problems, plant improvements and design basis documentation.
  • Providing technical support for shop maintenance including resolving complex technical questions, providing input to the content of maintenance procedures and resolving complex technical questions related to plant modification implementation.
  • Performing project management functions for emergent work including leading troubleshooting efforts, participating in Problem Solving and Decision-Making teams and developing repair strategies for plant equipment.
  • Completing activities in accordance with industry codes and standards, and FENOC Fleet practices, policies and procedures.
  • Performing Emergency Response Organization (ERO) duties as assigned.




  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering [FE] certificate preferred.
  • Prior professional-level engineering experience preferred.
  • Engineering experience with both analog and digital instrumentation and control equipment and systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Word.
  • Effective written and oral communications skills, including the capability to effectively interface with all levels of management across the plant's organizations.
  • Work extended hours, shift schedules, and perform on-call duties when necessary.
  • Reside within site-specific ERO response time.
