About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [PEN]

 

This position is for a Mechanical, Civil / Structural Design or Fire Protection Engineer at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Perry, Ohio.

 

Your role will be accountability for effecting change to the approved plant design, including those specific attributes or engineering characteristics, which bound the design basis or which define the functionality or design characteristics of the plant’s structures, systems, or components (SSC).  

 

Responsibilities include:

 

• Developing mechanical engineering-specific solutions in support of plant design modifications, plant activities that are in the 12-week work management schedule and for refueling outages for various systems and components for a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) Nuclear power generating facility.

• Preparing engineering change packages, emergent temporary modifications, engineering calculations, vendor technical manual updates, and performing equivalency evaluations for obsolete equipment and design specification alterations.

• Updating design/licensing basis documentation, including design drawings, vendor drawings, configuration management database and the Updated Safety Analysis Report (USAR).

• Performing fire protection system analysis and design (combustible loading, 10CFR50.48, and 10CFR50 Appendix R) .

• Performing independent reviews and design verification of peer work products.

• Interfacing with and coordinating activities performed by outside engineering/consulting service companies.

• Completing 10CFR50.59 documentation, preparation, and verification.

• Completing operability determinations and functionality assessments in accordance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) RIS 2005-20.

• Developing and completing investigations and corrective actions in accordance with the Corrective Action Program related to equipment problems, plant improvements and design basis documentation.

• Providing technical support for shop maintenance including resolving complex technical questions, providing input to the content of maintenance procedures and resolving complex technical questions related to plant modification implementation.

• Performing project management functions for emergent work including leading troubleshooting efforts, participating in Problem Solving and Decision-Making teams and developing repair strategies for plant equipment.

• Completing activities in accordance with industry codes and standards, and FENOC Fleet practices, policies and procedures.

• Performing Emergency Response Organization (ERO) duties as assigned.


 Qualifications at the Nuclear Engineer Level II:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited instituion is required.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering [FE] certificate is preferred. 
  • Must be able to work independently in leadership and mentoring roles with little Supervisory involvement.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong analytical ability.
  • Able to deliver quality and accurate work within established deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to make formal technical presentations to various management levels.
  • Ability to work extended hours, shift schedules and perform on-call duties when necessary.
  • Must reside within site-specific ERO response time.

 

Qualifications at the Nuclear Engineer Level III level include all of the above, plus:

 

  • Minimum of 3 years professional-level technical experience in the nuclear industry OR 5 years of related technical experience in a non-nuclear industry is required.


Qualifications at the Nuclear Engineer Level IV level include all of the above, plus:

 

  • Minimum of 5 years professional-level technical experience in the nuclear industry or 8 years of related technical experience in a non-nuclear industry is required.
