About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU]


The selected candidate may be located in PA or NJ.

This position is responsible for managing, monitoring and controlling Emerging Technology (EmT) programs to ensure they safely achieve the program deliverables within the approved scope, cost and schedule.


Responsibilities include:


  • Systematic development, standardization, optimization, implementation, management, and effectiveness tracking of assigned EmT Programs across all FEU operating companies. 
  • Assisting in development and obtaining approvals of budget, executing approved implementation and change management plans.
  • Supporting the operation and maintenance of assets.
  • Evaluating and monitoring programs – standard variance reporting; identify, resolve, and escalate issues; identify and obtain approval for scope/schedule/resource changes. 
  • Ensuring well defined expected benefits to the company for each assigned program and confirming realization of those benefits.
  • Assisting with development of appropriate technology standards and coordinating engineering support as needed.
  • Supporting IT System Integration – including technology protocols and communications platforms
  • Assisting with assigned EmT rate filings/reports including resulting discovery responses. 
  • Supporting and partnering with EmT Strategy Group.  This includes Program Teams, participation in key industry organizations such as EPRI and others, and through all processes (regulatory, policy, advocacy, business strategy, etc.)
  • Providing support for developing communications plans and ensuring visibility of assigned EmT programs internally across FE, as well as externally with all stakeholders.
  • Long range planning (10 years) to assist FEU and the Op Co’s in developing consistent longer-term strategies and plans that align with the emerging technologies roadmap.  Coordinating planning closely with Rates/Regulatory, Long-Range Planning, and Distribution Support.
  • Under direct supervision developing Distribution Emerging Technologies Project/Program Methodology (similar to the Transmission Methodology that has been developed).  Methodology and guidelines that will serve to identify potential projects and programs to achieve the overall desired results of improving the health, reliability, and capacity of the FirstEnergy distribution system for now and the future as a Smart Grid.
  • Under direct supervision developing Beneficial Electrification, Storage and Micro-grid Project/Program Methodology (like the Transmission Methodology that has been developed).  Methodology and guidelines that will serve to identify potential projects and programs to achieve the overall desired results of improving the health, reliability, and capacity of the FirstEnergy distribution system for now and the future as a Smart Grid.
  • Assisting with presentations to leadership and external stakeholders on program justifications and program updates.
  • Using excellent communication skills with good judgment
  • Consistently anticipating customer needs and delivering high quality results.


Qualifications include:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering Technology, Business, Finance, Project Management, or related discipline plus 7-10 years of related distribution experience OR Associates degree in Engineering Technology, Business, Finance, Project Management, or related discipline plus 8+ years of related distribution experience.  In lieu of a degree, High School Diploma (or GED) plus 13+ years of related distribution experience
  • Project management skills are required with an ability to develop, manage and control multiple tasks.
  • Must be a team player and possess a willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Gain an understanding of FE safety practices.
  • Gain knowledge of electrical utility distribution system planning, design, and operation
  • Gain knowledge of company’s practices and standards for engineering construction and maintenance of distribution lines
  • Gain knowledge of electrical distribution systems and the application of electrical protection and switching equipment preferred
  • Gain knowledge of system planning and protection (relays, reclosers, fusing and coordination)
  • Ability to communicate complexities to individuals
  • Persuasive and professional in verbal and written communications with multiple constituencies including employees, customer and other stakeholders
  • Ability to develop creative solutions and resolve operational issues while working through and seeing past today’s challenges to develop and implement new programs.
  • Foster creativity and problem solving
  • Gain knowledge of Work Management Tools (GIS View, CREWS, SAP), Outage Management System (Power On), Transmission Outage Databases and Planning & Protection Programs (CYME DIST, CYME TCC, LFDMS, RSS and CASCADE)
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical ability
  • Gain knowledge of distribution equipment and maintenance practices
  • Proficient in use of computers and PC based applications including and Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Gain experience in accomplishing responsibilities in a timely manner through maximizing organizational resources, financial decision making and employing logical engineering approaches.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical ability are required
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, with multiple departments in multiple locations.
  • Ability to work in both an office and field environment.
  • Willing and able to support travel to various company locations (including overnight travel) as needed.
