FirstEnergy is seeking applicants to fill available engineering positions in the Transmission, Construction, Design, Operations and Support groups.

FirstEnergy is comprised of ten investor owned electric utilities serving 6 million customers located in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Engineering opportunities are in the areas of:

Transmission and Substation Design; Transmission System Operations and Support; Maintenance, Commissioning and Support; System Planning and Protection; Construction Support and Management; Project and Portfolio Management; Asset Management; Regulatory Compliance; Data Management and Control; and Cyber Security.

Primary reporting locations are Akron, Ohio; Greensburg and Reading Pennsylvania; Fairmont, West Virginia and other limited locations across the states served. 

Openings are for inexperienced & experienced engineers. There are multiple positions and can be located in OH, NJ, or PA.

These engineering positions are largely in support of FirstEnergy’s Energize the Future program to upgrade, expand and modernize the transmission system, with an approximate $1.2 billion dollars investment annually.


Responsibilities include:

  • Providing safe and reliable electrical service to our customers in a cost effective and environmentally responsible manner.
  • Promoting a diverse and inclusive work environment that values an open exchange of ideas to promote innovation.
  • Recognizing risks and taking precautions and preventative measures to ensure a safe work environment for others as well as self
  • Conducting technical research and analysis, interpreting results and making recommendations
  • Offering and implementing technical solutions to basic technical processes and/or projects
  • Preparing engineering change packages, specifications, technical reports and presentations
  • Providing engineering output documents, such as minor modifications and corrective action response
  • Managing and completing assigned activities to support timely implementation of required system operations
  • Ensuring compliance with design codes/standards
  • Providing sound customer service
  • Actively seeking ways to add value within scope of assignments
  • Anticipating and delivering results on a variety of job-specific projects
  • Performing project management and assistance in project start-up
  • Working independently as well as in a team environment                                                      


Qualifications include:

  • BSEE (electrical), BSME (mechanical) or BSCE (civil) degree OR BSET (Engineering Technology) with Professional Engineer license (PE) required
  • A questioning attitude and desire for continuous learning.
  • Demonstratable analytical, problem solving and technical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to work within established deadlines driving tasks to successful completion.
  • Ability of collaborating with a varied and diverse group internal or external to the company.
  • Must have proficient written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to FirstEnergy’s Safety Policies and the Accident Prevention Handbook.
  • Understanding of FirstEnergy’s Manual of Operations.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. 
  • Ability to work extended hours or afterhours (e.g. evening, weekend and holidays) callouts to provide onsite technical and operational guidance in support of system emergencies.
  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels across the FE organization as well as with outside parties.
  • Model active learning.
  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must live within a 45-minute commute of assigned work location
