About the Opportunity

This is an open position with Ohio Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [OEPP]. 


Minimum Starting Rate: $38.04 per hour / Top Rate: $46.72 per hour


The selected candidate may be offered a position within the same job family, at a level that is lower than what was posted. This will be determined based upon the results of the interview process and testing with Workforce Development which considers the candidate’s hands on skills, electrical knowledge, work history, experience level, and other relevant qualifications.




1. Installing, inspecting, testing, adjusting, calibrating and repairing all types of instruments, relays and control equipment in substations.

2. Performing various tests on electrical equipment such as ratio, polarity, and phase angle tests on transformers; mechanical-timing tests on oil circuit breakers; and tests on oscillograph equipment, load frequency control, or other special apparatus.

3. Making recommendations for coordination of relays and fuses.

4. Checking panel wiring in connection with the installation of instruments, relays and control equipment, or directing others in such work.

5. Making inspections of all relays, control circuits and automatic reclosing equipment.

6. Making field checks of drawings and sketches; working from blueprints and specifications.

7. Maintaining the amplification equipment on telephone circuits.

8. Preparing the required records, reports, drawings or other data.

9. Testing, calibrating and repairing indicating graphotype instruments.

10. Testing and checking all instruments, relays and control equipment in new installations before circuits are energized.

11. Directing and training employees assigned to the work.

12. Maintaining a high standard of housekeeping during and upon completion of work.

13. Determining causes of electrical equipment failure; making necessary repairs and adjustments; making recommendations for necessary corrective steps.

14. Reporting abnormal conditions that develop during progress of work.

15. Performing the duties of Relay Tester A.

16. Performing other work, as assigned.




1. Must have at least two years' experience as Relay Tester A or the equivalent.

2. Must have in addition to graduation from high school, two years of technical training related to the work.

3. Must have a thorough working knowledge of electronics and the principles of the operations and function of instruments, relays and control equipment.

4. Must have demonstrated aptitude for and skill in the performance of the duties of Substation Electrician A.

5. Must have a thorough working knowledge of the locations, layout, arrangement, functions and connection of the equipment in the electrical system.

6. Must have demonstrated aptitude for and skill in precision work on small, delicate and complex electrical equipment.

7. Must have a thorough understanding of the operation of power circuits, their connections and interconnections.

8. Must have the ability to diagnose trouble and determine proper corrective measures.

9. Must have demonstrated judgment, ingenuity and initiative to a high degree.

10. Must be thoroughly familiar with the methods and practices of the Substation Section.

11. Must be able to make neat, clear, concise and accurate records and reports, and properly receive and quickly and correctly interpret orders.

12. Must have a valid Class A CDL.
