About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEG]


The Nuclear Core Design Engineer reports to FirstEnergy’s corporate office in Akron, Ohio performing all manner of core design and reactor physics support calculations and analyses.


This role can be based out of our Beaver Valley Power Plant or West Akron Campus.


Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the Beaver Valley core design project
  • Performing core physics calculations using the Studsvik CMS software
  • Providing core physics data support to Reactor Engineering, Operations, Training, and other applicable groups at site as well as the FENOC Fuel Planning & Performance group
  • Initiating vendor analyses and performing verification of the results of vendor-supplied reload analyses
  • Providing support for vendor design verifications and quality audits
  • Participating in spent fuel criticality analyses, strategic fuel cycle planning, decay heat calculations, and reactor pressure vessel fluence calculations


Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required (preferably Nuclear Engineering)
  • Minimum 8 years of Nuclear Experience or 10 years of related technical experience in relevant non-nuclear field required  
  • Proven performance in the areas of reactor core design and core physics calculations desired
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication abilities
  • Strong analytical ability
  • Ability to perform computer programming is preferred
  • Studsvik Scandpower CMS software experience considered a plus
  • Demonstrated experience performing project management preferred
