The job of Surveyor requires an individual to perform a variety of survey-related functions in support of various departments and Operating Companies of FirstEnergy.  The ideal candidate will have a sound understanding of transmission line engineering design and construction standards along with a broad base of knowledge in general surveying practices and procedures.   A Professional Land Survey License (State of Ohio) is preferred.  This position requires the ability to work safely in a Team environment as a member of a survey crew assisting in the performance of boundary, topographic, transmission line surveys, right-of-way acquisition work and construction layout surveys utilizing the latest equipment and surveying technologies. 


Responsibilities include:


  • Ability to work safely according to company policies and procedures while supporting all aspects of Transmission Surveying daily crew workload. 
  • Assisting FirstEnergy ROW Services and Real Estate in the review and interpretation of existing utility easements; and in the acquisition of new or expanded transmission line easements and Substation property with the preparation of sketches, maps, exhibits and easement plans.
  • Proficiency with Surveying instruments and software systems including: GPS, Total Stations (Ground LiDAR a plus), TDS Survey Pro, Carlson Survey and Leica Geosystems HDS Cyclone.
  • Profiency with Civil 3D and AutoCAD.
  • Reviewing transmission line encroachments to meet NESC clearance requirements and coordinating encroachment responses with ROW Services and Transmission Line Maintenance personnel and ensure the public safety is protected.
  • Completing analysis of title research, evaluation of survey data, plats and property records.
  • Researching and exploring new technologies that will effectively enable work processes to be automated increasing efficiencies while decreasing the risk of human error.
  • Supporting and sustaining FirstEnergy as a high performing organization by contributing to excellent organizational performance and values of FirstEnergy through responsible effective work performance.
  • Ensuring standards and equipment specifications are up to date and accurate, reviewing against industry standards and best practices. 


Qualifications include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Surveying or Engineering Technology preferred.  In lieu of degree, other relevant technical degree or equivalent experience may also be considered.  Consideration will be given to applicants having extensive utility or transportation engineering experience, or multi-disciplined technical and operational background in lieu of a college degree.
  • Licensed Surveyor with 10+ years’ experience in the industry is required.
  • Working knowledge of applicable computer software necessary to fulfill job duties including but not limited to Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.  Knowledge of FileNet, SAP, PLS-CADD, GIS and Cascade preferred but not a requirement.
  • Valid driver’s license required.       
  • Must embrace a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment for co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to transition from field to office as deemed necessary to aid in the completion of Right-of-way Engineering projects requested by Transmission Line Design and FirstEnergy Real Estate.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and be able to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines, unexpected developments, changes in project scope, budget constraints, unforeseen field problems and demands on time for work assignments outside of the normal duties.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and develop and maintain relationships across FE, with outside firms and manufacturers that further facilitate the cooperation needed to complete assigned tasks and that will inspire others to achieve, or exceed, goals.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams to coordinate designs with other FirstEnergy areas of responsibility including Survey, Siting and Permitting, Project Management, Maintenance, Forestry, Real Estate and Construction, as well as the Regional operating companies
  • Ability to make practical decisions without undue delay and based on the best information available at the time that the decision must be made.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with good verbal skills and writing skills, providing comprehensive project status reports, clear and concise correspondence, and accurate information.
  • Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be self-directed and not dependent on detailed instruction from others.
  • Ability to support numerous locations, must be willing to travel throughout the service area.
  • Must be physically able to work outdoors and on construction sites under all weather conditions.
