About the Opportunity

Maintain and support the FirstEnergy Cyber Security Program, protecting all corporate cyber assets. Successful candidates for this position enjoy merging business objectives with security program requirements to deliver useful and secure IT systems. A strong ability to read interpretively and to write clearly and concisely is needed for this position. This intern position’s base reporting location is in Wadsworth Township, Ohio and reports to the Supervisor of Cyber Security. The Cyber Security Policy Analyst works across all FirstEnergy subsidiaries and business units to protect the cyber assets of First Energy.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Support FirstEnergy’s compliance with NERC CIP, protecting the Bulk Electric System.
  • In conjunction with the team and other stakeholders, develop and maintain security baselines, procedures, and other strategies that effectively protect cyber assets while ensuring reliable and consistent system operations.
  • Consult with Business Units and IT on security and protection measures of systems and information during the design and implementation of an on-premise and cloud/SaaS solutions.
  • Participate in the Cyber Incident Response process
  • Understand software and system vulnerability processes, manage vulnerability patches through a process lifecycle, and perform vulnerability assessments on systems and services
  • Support the implementation of FirstEnergy IT projects by assisting with the implementation of devices; evaluating vendor solutions; assisting with coordination of vulnerability assessment activities; assisting with review of programs, policies, procedures and standards in relation to cyber security best practices.

 

As a FirstEnergy Intern you will also be expected to:

  • Fully participate in the FirstEnergy Co-Op/Intern program mandatory events
  • Utilize knowledge, skills and abilities to work on challenging assignments and contribute to FirstEnergy’s success
  • Gain understanding of the electric utility business and seize the opportunity to explore potential career paths at FirstEnergy
  • Engage in candidate self-assessments and use supervisory feedback to improve your performance
  • Develop career contacts and receive guidance from coaches and peers
  • Network with other students
  • Present to department members and leadership at the end of each session/rotation to highlight projects and contributions

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college with a major in Computer Science or technology equivalent degree.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)
  • Successful completion of basic computer science or technology coursework
  • Must work effectively in a team environment and on concurrent assignments
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of two intern sessions: Spring, Summer or Fall
  • Must be willing to relocate to / reside near the job location for the duration of the assignment (some candidates may be eligible for a living stipend)
  • Positive communication skills (verbal and written) as well as organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet project deadlines

 

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Knowledge of technologies used to secure networks, protect against cyber threats, and protect critical infrastructure
  • Knowledge of operation and administration Windows, Linux/Unix, or Networking technologies
  • Effective communication skills which includes creating and delivering presentations, briefs, and training sessions. Must compose well-written, professional documents and reports with minimal editorial and proofing support.
  • Translate technical output from systems and assessment tools into understandable reports and action plans
  • Proven team player, contributes to team goals, encourages and supports team members
