About the Opportunity

Under general supervision, the individual will serve as a member of the Transmission Security Engineering team.  The IT Security Operations Specialist is responsible for the customization of Security Operations Center (SOC) data sets, technologies, and events to satisfy SOC use case requirements.  The IT Security Operations Specialist will primarily develop new architecture and data gathering techniques for those currently not in the SIEM software. 

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing and implementing a security centric data lake solution within FirstEnergy.
  • Providing support for data quality (DQ) technology, including development, data profiling, and data quality assessments.
  • Working in collaboration with Security Operations Center Analysts to create new data driven indicator collection, analysis, and reporting procedures.
  • Defining observational study designs and execute data gathering techniques with automation where applicable.
  • Continuous tasking of threat to dataset relationship mapping which will be prioritized specifically to FirstEnergy and the energy sector.
  • Performing data studies and reviews for specific Security Operations Center use cases.

Qualifications Include:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college with a major in Computer Science or technology equivalent degree.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)
  • Successful completion of basic Computer Science coursework
  • Must work effectively in a team environment and on concurrent assignments
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of two intern sessions: Spring, Summer or Fall
  • Must be willing to relocate to / reside near the job location for the duration of the assignment (some candidates may be eligible for a living stipend)
  • Positive communication skills (verbal and written) as well as organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet project deadlines

 

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Course work or experience using Data Science technologies (examples include but not limited to: predictive analytics, AI – pattern recognition, data virtualization, data visualization)
  • Course work or experience in statistical analysis of data
  • Basic knowledge of Boolean logic, regular expressions, TCP/IP fundamentals, Unix administration, Microsoft Windows administration.
  • Basic knowledge and experience with SQL queries, R, and scripting (Perl, Python, PowerShell etc.)
  • Security data handling as it relates to security information management tools
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and oversight
  • Proven team player, contributes to team goals, encourages and supports team members
  • Ability to work with highly confidential information
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently
