About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company,  a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [SC00]

The Advanced Communications Rep., State Communications, is responsible for developing and implementing external communications that support FirstEnergy’s West Virginia/Maryland service areas.
 

This mobile position can be sited at any location within the FirstEnergy service territory which is OH, WV, PA, and MD.  The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need.  This option is not available in the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oregon or Washington at this time. 


Responsibilities include:
 

  • Developing strategies that earn positive news stories supporting key company initiatives
  • Drafting, editing, and implementing news releases, feature stories, fact sheets, video scripts and newsletter copy that is accurate, grammatically correct and completed on time
  • Cultivating and maintaining strong working relationships with print, television and radio media
  • Fostering productive working relationships with other FirstEnergy work groups to identify initiatives, events and stories that can be promoted at the local level
  • Consulting with state leadership teams to ensure consistent message is conveyed to media, customers, local officials, regulators and other external stakeholders
  • Overseeing media training and coaching for local company spokespersons, as needed
  • Proactively identifying issues and pitfalls before they occur and develop appropriate responses
  • Participating in company committees/task forces, as needed
  • Providing support during large scale outages or other significant events as part of the External Communications Emergency Response Team
     

Qualifications:
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related discipline required (advanced degree a plus)
  • Minimum 7 years relevant work experience required.  Relevant work experience will include high-level communication skills and proven media relations experience
  • Strong writing and verbal skills and ability to craft compelling, impactful content based on conducting research and interviewing subject matter experts
  • Strong editing and analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of social media tools and ability to incorporate video/photos into story content
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various groups in the organization on a self-directed basis
  • Ability to stay poised and on-message when faced with difficult situations relating to storm outages, disgruntled customers, employee issues and unpopular company decisions
  • Experience working with tight deadlines, ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work
  • Expected to respond to weekend and afterhours media calls on a rotational basis
  • Ability to independently work long hours during prolonged electric system outages or other emergency situations
  • Willingness to travel to other FirstEnergy locations, as needed or during crisis situations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Office 365, SharePoint)
