Under directive supervision or direction and as assigned:


  1. Installs, tests, calibrates, and maintains all types of protective relays and all types of electrical circuits used in conjunction with relaying, automatic controls and other relay related electrical equipment.
  2. Assists higher classified personnel in the performance of all departmental duties.
  3. Maintains records associated with the work assignments.
  4. Makes field corrections to prints and prepares reports and field sketches.
  5. Is responsible for electrical and mechanical tagging and switching and the accurate completion of the required forms for equipment isolation as directed.
  6. May be required to make special studies and tests related to relaying.
  7. Directs and coordinates the work of others working with or assisting him.
  8. Performs other related or lesser skilled duties for which he is qualified or has received proper instruction or direction.
  9. Must be on the approved Dispatching Department’s Tagging List.
  10. Learns the duties of Relay Technician-Sr. and must pass job skill demonstrations and an advancement test and to qualify for advancement to this higher classification within a two-to-four-year period.  Employees will receive proper training/instruction and exposure to the material before being tested.  Will be advanced to Relay Technician, Sr. after successful completion of these examinations and two years’ experience as a Relay Technician.  Failure to meet these requirements within four years will result in the employee being reassigned to the classification he held prior to being awarded a Relay Technician, Jr. position
  11. The main differences between the Relay Technician and the Relay Technician, Sr. classifications are the degree of responsibility and the type of supervision or direction furnished. 
  12. Must have had six (6) months of experience as a Relay Technician, Jr. and must have passed written and practical examinations to qualify for advancement from Relay Technician, Jr. to this higher classification.
  13. Must have a thorough knowledge of substation, transmission and distribution operation and procedures.
  14. Must be able to perform non-routine operations of moderate complexity and variety, exercising judgment where standard methods of procedure are not available.
  15. Must be able to understand technical problems associated with the circuitry and equipment involved.
  16. Must be thoroughly familiar with the Company’s electrical tagging rules and become familiar with the Company’s mechanical tagging rules.
  17. Must be thoroughly familiar with the Company’s Safety Rules including methods of resuscitation.
  18. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  19. Must be willing to work extra and/or irregular hours.

We administer selection tests for a variety of positions. The required tests have been developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a trade association of investor-owned electric utility companies.  We strongly encourage potential employees to review all information, including the sample test brochures, and to use the available practice tests before taking the actual tests.  Click this link to access the practice tests. Practice tests provide sample questions and detailed discussions of the correct answers. It's important to take the practice test as you would the actual one, with similar intensity and concentration.  You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. 

Note: EEI website does not allow access to actual tests. Testing is held at various locations throughout our service territory based on where the job is located.
