About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU]


The reporting location for this role can be any of the FE facilities.


This position will oversee the work of staff responsible for the overall management of the Transmission Reliability department and direction of department personnel.  Responsible for analyzing transmission system reliability performance data; determining root causes of transmission system reliability issues; determining solutions to resolve transmission system reliability problems; coordinating/championing solutions through to implementation; coordinating regulatory (FERC, NERC, PJM, state regulatory bodies) reliability initiatives; developing, maintaining and reporting transmission reliability metrics; preparing and reporting transmission reliability data to NERC, NATF and state bodies; and fostering a transmission reliability culture of excellence throughout FirstEnergy Transmission.


Responsibilities include:

  • Directing and developing Transmission Reliability department staff responsible for the direction, goals and solutions to enhance transmission system reliability.
  • Ensuring thorough analysis of transmission system reliability issues to determine causes and solutions.  Champion solutions as required.
  • Coordinating regulatory (FERC, NERC, PJM, state regulatory bodies) reliability initiatives.
  • Developing, maintaining and reporting reliability metrics, including demonstrating how FET transmission system compares to industry standards.
  • Preparing and reporting transmission reliability data to NERC, NATF and state bodies.
  • Leading / driving transmission reliability benchmarking.
  • Coordinating assessment (e.g. peer reviews, assist visits, etc.) activities associated with transmission system performance and reliability.
  • Ensuring transmission system reliability is appropriately considered when prioritizing transmission projects.
  • Coordinating with the Operating Companies to ensure the transmission system is adequately supporting reliability.
  • Creating an environment of accountability and a sense of urgency for meeting agreed-upon expectations/deadlines.
  • Executing the performance management process by providing feedback and coaching on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
  • Actively partnering with staff to assist them in creating priorities, developing goals, assessing progress, and providing meaningful feedback.
  • Willing to travel throughout the FirstEnergy system including periodic overnight stays.
  • Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations / requirements.
  • Supporting the emergency plan through the assignment of staff to fill emergency response roles including hazard responders.


Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering or related discipline required.  Advanced degree is a plus. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required. 
  • Relevant work experience includes but is not limited to process / project development, planning / analysis, regulatory compliance, and / or performance reporting.
  • Commitment to FirstEnergy's Safety Policies and the Accident Prevention Handbook.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with employees at all levels of FirstEnergy Corp.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; Ability to effectively present complex subject matter to all levels of management and to outside stakeholders.
  • Experience in process / project development, planning / analysis, and performance reporting is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and the ability to lead others in achieving goals is required.
  • Must be capable of driving projects and tasks to completion by evaluating conditions and assigning proper resources in support of these tasks.
  • Ability to demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.
  • Model active learning through continuing to develop breadth of knowledge, skills, and perspective.
  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines; Coach others in effective decision making.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office tools including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
  • Effective leadership skills, to communicate with and direct work of others, ensure safety and create productive and positive work results.
  • Management / leadership experience preferred.
  • A working knowledge of electrical engineering, transmission substation equipment, transmission system protection and transmission system operations is preferred.
  • Prior experience with root cause analysis, Six Sigma and / or statistical analysis is preferred.
  • Understanding of FirstEnergy's Manual of Operations is preferred.
  • A general knowledge of regulatory requirements from both state and federal agencies that impact the design, maintenance and operations of transmission and distribution substations is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of electric utility operations and compliance is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of general compliance documentation and audit procedures as well as Regulatory audit processes is preferred.
  • Familiarity with either or all - Cascade / QlikView / PowerBase / Energy Delivery Outage Application (EDOA) /  SAP / Microsoft Access database is preferred.
